edited March 2014 in Esophageal Cancer #1
I am scheduled for surgery on December 28th. I was diagnosed in August 2009 with stage III esophageal cancer with no other involvement according all of the scans and an endoscopy. The doctors will be doing an Ivor Lewis and he said if there is cancer on the liver he will close me up-scary. I am hoping I come through the surgery ok and that I can return to a fairly normal life. I will have the procedure done at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, KS. I had chemo and radiation and the tumor shrank from 7 inches to 1 1/2 inches. However, the doctors may have to use my intestines-this really scares me. Please say a prayer for me. I would appreciate any info concerning recovery.

Thanks,
Tamara Smith (tksmitty)

    Tamara,

Welcome to our site, my husband 45 years old had the surgery on 23rd of July surgery wise he did good, but had other problems after surgery. I will say it is a slow process of recovery, but if your strong you can do this. Just know you will have alot of tubes and in ICU a few days, and you won't be eating real food for about 2 weeks. I wish you the best and know we all pray for each other on this site. If I can help with any quesitons please let me know. I have walked your shoes so I know what you are heading for.

    Take care

    Surgery
I will have two surgeons who do this quite often. He said he may have to use the intestine, because the tumor was so much in my stomach. I had a sonogram endoscopy and it showed very little cancer in the stomach-he said he has to wait and see when he gets in there. I have prayed really hard for the stomach. I breezed through the cheom and radiation I really was never sick. I threw up once or twice. The doctors were amazed. Wish I would have found this site sooner. I have to get this tumor out I am 8 weeks out of chemo radiation. Thanks for your support and prayers. God Bless You.

    Praying
    Tamara,
became a member of the site after your scheduled surgery but have just said a prayer for you hoping that things went well and a speedy recovery. Remember speedy might be measured in weeks or months not days.
