Just wondering - for those who have had surgery - when you left the hospital did they let you walk out?

Was talking with Son's GF and her mom today and somehow it came up that when i had surgery I was up and walking 6 hrs after the end of surgery (Dr. wanted me up sooner but aide never came and got me up til the afternoon aide came and I was up within an hour of her getting there and had a lot of walks that night. Anywho back to the point - I mentioned that I walked out of the hospital the next morning to them and they all but called me a bald-faced liar - hospitals always make you ride out in a wheelchair and NEVER let you walk out! I'm sure they would have never believed me IF Son - who picked me up - hadn't come in and told them that yes I did walk out.

SO did you walk out or ride out?

(edit added - I had a mod. rad. that was fairly extensive.)(When port was put in they made me ride out.)

They are supposed to wheel you out in a W/C. I can only see walking out if you had a short proceedure and a family member or friend walks you out. If you were in a few hours you are supposed to be wheeled out I think it's the RULE if you were under anesthesia for the procedure, you may not need it if you were given just a local. I walked out with my husband after my colonoscopy/EGD. I drove myself to and from both biopsies on my breast tumors, actually a nurse walked be out to the door.

I also had lumpectomy and was wheeled out.

I know that it is normal for all hospitals to have patients even with the simplest of surgeries. That being said, when I had my hysterectomy for uterine cancer I walked constantly in the halls for hours at a time to regain my strength and because the lady next to me had an elderly aunt who overindulged in perfume and I needed to get away from the smell. The day I was discharged I had been walking the hall from 8 am and only stopped to nibble my lunch. They discharged me at 2 pm, i sent my family down to get the car. When I asked where the wheelchair was they said they saw no reason for me to use one. So I changed into real clothes, hopped the elevator with the discharge person, and when the elevator doors opened I walked out to the surprise of my family (hubby, mom, sis, and daughter) I raised my arms above my head and said "She walked in and she walked out". It was such a good feeling. I didn't feel like an invalid and it made me feel strong about fighting the cancer. So it does happen. 7 months later when I had my gall bladder removed laproscopically that was done as same day surgery, they made me ride in a wheelchair. Good figure!! LOL

I was told that I couldn't leave (after lumectomy) until I could walk and then was put into a chair and wheeled out! Talk about confusing!!

I've had several surgeries and was always wheeled out even tho I requested to let me walk. One time they made me wait a long time before someone became available to wheel me. Most of my outpatient tests were a different story. Always walked out.

I walked out. I had a modified radical mastectomy and left less than 24 hours after my surgery. I felt great and walked as much as possible the day of so when it came time for my release, the nurse said "I know the answer to this, but I have to ask... do you want a wheel chair or do you want to walk out". I smiled and she knew my answer. I was actually quite surprised because I always thought it was a requirement that they wheel you out because if something happened, they could be sued. I felt like Steph. I was proud to be feeling so well and thought it was a way to kick cancer in the butt!

How dare 'they' (whoever they are) call you a bold-faced liar!! Why would anyone lie about such a thing?

I only had a lumpectomy. Rolled into surgery at 3:00, rolled out of surgery at 4:00, and walked out of the hospital by 5:20. A wheel chair wasn't offered.

I was wheeled out as well. I also thought it was a law of some sort that you had to be wheeled out. Even when I had my kids, I wasn't allowed to walk out of the hospital.

I was discharged last Sunday--I walked out. When had my lumpectomy as day surgery, I walked out. Two different states by the way. It is not the law but it may very well be policy which is about the same for a hospital worker. Also, where I work--in a hospital--our patients can walk, ride or crawl as they see fit.

I tried to tell them I could walk but they insisted because it was "so far." I was in the University of Washington medical center and we wheeled for seemed like two miles. I have no idea where I was in that huge building but it would have been a really long walk! and I'm not sure we would have found the door without the aide!

I had a bilateral mast. I was in the hospital for 2 days. The day that I was put in my room (which was about 3:00 pm), NOBODY came by to see if I wanted to get up to walk or not. (Now, I am pissed about it, but at the time, I was happy just to lay there and veg.)

I was in pain, because the morphine wasn't working, so they had to make adjustments to the pain medicine. So it wasn't until the next day that the mixture starting working, and I was feeling better, but STILL nobody came to see if I wanted to walk. They didn't even come to give me a sponge bath.

That night, my husband finally said, 'let's get you up and going', and he walked me up and down the hall of the hospital. It was quite a trip!

On the day that I finally went home, one of the PA's came in in the morning and asked if I wanted a sponge bath....then she said 'you know, we should have done this yesterday, but I assumed that your husband was going to bath you and walk you'. I was floored by this statement!

I was though, wheeled out and I made them pay dearly for it....it was in January, we had a cold snap here in Milwaukee and it was about -20degrees. I took my dang time getting out of that wheelchair!

Then I put in a complaint with the head of the nurses and told my doctor about it

I was wheeled out by a very stoned teenage volunteer. I was scared she was going to crash the chair.

I hada mastectomy, nodes and expander, left in 24 hrs instead of two days, my doc came looking for me and I was already discharged. walked out even up and down some stairs, slowly. I do great with surgery not so much with chemo. I have had lots of surgery can only remember one time being wheeled out, and i shouldnt have been discharged too soon after day surgery.

I honestly don't recall if I walked out or not~ but I think I was in a wheelchair as I do recall being very groggy. I was in and out so fast it's a wonder it wasn't a drive-thru.

Hugs,
C♥
