As if being on chemo isn't enough, my 8 year old just tested positive for the H1N1. Thank God she already had the shot or she could be much worse than she currently is. Anyway, I am trying to be careful: lots of hand sanitizer, letting hubby handle the "vomit patrol", etc. HOWEVER, I was a little surprised when my oncologist said that she would not give me the tamiflu prophylactically. Instead, she wants me to call her if I have any flu-like symptoms and would treat me then. Seems risky to me considering my next chemo treatment is Thursday. OH, she did suggest that I wear the mask when I'm around my child. (After being exposed all weekend? okay)

As for all the craziness that seems to be following me lately, I remain optimistic. Can anyone call me Candide?

I'm so sorry about your daughter having the flu. It's like ... when it rains it pours ... but ... it sounds like you have a great husband who is doing everything he can to help you and your sick daughter.

I asked my oncologist about the H1N1 shot ... and it really sounds like "they" are focusing on the young children and the pregnant women. I was told the same thing ... just to stay "alert" and if I have any temperature at all ... to let them know. I guess they really need to be careful "rationing" what drugs they have. So ... I'm just on my guard as far as my temperature goes ... and using a lot of hand sanitizer ... taking a lot of vitamin C etc. Just trying to stay as healthy as I can.

Take care and I hope your daughter is feeling better soon.

hugs.

Thanks Teena. Just that little bit of reassurance makes me feel more comfortable with the situation. I'm really trying to stay positive but at some point something has got to get easier. This is just becoming too ridiculous. So knock on wood and neither one of us will get the flu on top of everything else... Good luck, Pitt

Pitt,
I hope your daughter feels better soon.
Jake has had one heck of a cold after having strep throat and I haven't either one. My oncologist told me it is because I have very high WBC--so hopefully I won't get anything.
He has his seasonal flu shot and the first booster shot for the H1N1.

I use hand sanitizer all the time--I even have a pump bottle of it in my car.

I am glad that your husband volunteered for the nasty vomit patrol duty.

Pitt what a bummer!! Hope your baby girl is quickly on the mend. My onc gave me the regular flu shot. I started chemo before the H1N1 became available and he said I would not be getting it. Please be so careful. I pray it skips you and the rest of your family. You have a great spirit and attitude, so as crummy as this, if you get into a downward spiral, I see you getting right back up!!!

Just an FYI, I had talked to my onco about taking extra vitamin c when I had a cold a few weeks back and he told me to absolutely NOT take extra. He said that it can help cancer cells fight off chemo. So talk to your doc before taking extra vitamins!! monica

I can tell you what my son told me a friend told him (I forget how he knew, in biology field I think). He said the regular flu is spread when you touch a surface that the germ is on and it enters the body. The H1N1 is sprayed into the air by sneezing or coughing and if you breathe it that's how it gets in the body. He said if it sits on a surface it dies. Maybe that is why she said to wear a mask.

If your immune system is strong now maybe you won't get it anyway. One son brought it home and I got sick too but my other son and husband didn't. Ask the doctor before chemo if what I said is correct. You know how info changes when it gets passed around. If you know how it spreads you can take precautions.

I sure hope you can get through this and avoid contracting HINI yourself. Just be vigilant in your hand washing, wear the mask and keep good tabs on your body (temp, etc.). I hope your daughter is feeling better soon. Take care and keep us updated.

Candide the Optomist, The effervescent Pollyanna or even the Fiddle-de-de I'll think about it tomorrow Scarlett! Or maybe even Meg Ryan's character in Joe vs The Volcano saying "It's always going to be something with you, isn't it?" You be whomever you want/need to be to get you through your sweet baby having H1N1. (I must say I have never heard of giving Tamiflu profylactically. If that were the case, most of us would forego the innoculation and get a prescription for Tamiflu!)

I send you a most delicious pot of cyber-soup; chicken of course~ prepared with love and well wishes for all of you! Be vigilant, and keep us in the loop. (((((HUGS)))))

My granddaughter had it about a month ago just when I was beginning the chemo discussions with my oncologist. Her pediatrician actually did treat her with tamiflu as well as her older brother as a precaution since she knew I was headed for chemo.
She didn't get it too bad, a couple days with spiked fevers and vomiting but she's been fighting staying totaling well since. Sending prayers and wishes your way.

I'm so glad that you have your husband's help with this. I know how much men hate vomit patrol. Just don't overdo yourself. Lola

am sure I would be crying daily during one of my 3 showers a day. I pray that God gives you strength during this very difficult time.

I will not give any advise regarding flu shots, etc .. as my children are older and both had flu shots, along with my husband 3 weeks ago. I opted not to put any more poision into my body.

I go thru Clorox disinfecting wipes like crazy. Stair rails up to 2nd floor, door knobs, light fixtures anywhere my family and I touch. I also us Clorox on my leather furniture in our family room and kitchen counters, bathroom etc. I have managed to stay safe during my daugther's 2 flu and colds these past 8 weeks. If I could, I would use clorox wipes on my 4 legged daughters .. my little Morkie and Tcup Yorkie - but I know the chemicals would hurt them. Over kill perhaps, but trying to protect myself and my wbc counts.

I truly wish I could help you in some way. So I am sending you prayers. I am also glad to hear that your hubby is standing strong, right next to you and your daughter.

Sorry to hear your daughter is sick. I'm sure you're freaking out about getting it. I used to be paranoid about being around sick people, but I haven't caught anything yet. But, I haven't been around the flu either. Just people with colds. I would wear a mask, too. Hope you and child do well.

You crack me up! You are so positive even when you are scared and worried. Thanks! My prayes are with you. Hope your daughter gets well quick. I know you are taking every precaution you can. And your husband is being and awesome dad and chemo angel by helping out. I bet not being able to do the normal mothering you want to is a bit unnerving. But try to step back if it is bugging you at all and relish in the fact that your husband is the dad he should be. You are very lucky.

I'm glad that you have a hubby to help you through this! I'm a single mom and at the first sign of a sniffle or a cough, I start giving them "Airborne'. Not sure if it would fight off the flu, but so far this stuff has been GOLDEN. They feel better right away. I've also been a 'germaphobic' since all this and go crazy with disinfectant and I've got a bottle of hand sanitizer in every room.

I hope your daughter fights this off FAST, not only for her sake, but yours as well. I'm sure it's got to kill you to stay away, as I feel terrible whenever my kids aren't feeling well and I don't want them to kiss me. UGHHH! I hate it! Please let us know when she's better so we can ease up on the worry! You'll get through it... it's just another bump.

Hugs & prayers ~ Mar

How is your daughter?? How are you? It's been a few days since this post and haven't noticed you posting anywhere else. I was actually laying down to fall asleep and you popped into my head. Hoping you just haven't had a chance to pop online and that all is well!

Thanks for all of the kind words and positive thoughts/prayers/etc. My little one is starting to feel better. She still has a cough but she is much much better. My husband actually took her out for a brief car ride yesterday so she could get some fresh air. My older daughter (10) is fighting something so we are keeping a close eye on her too. ( I just had a chemo treatment on thursday and the Neulasta shot is doing it's bone marrow over-producing wbc magic!) I have to be extra careful between today and next Wednesday as I tend to get a fever and mouth sores at this time.

My friend is a nurse and she brought over a package of surgical masks so I can at least walk into the room with them and say hi.

Thanks for caring everyone. You all make me feel so much better. I love that I found this discussion group. I'm really excited about feeling better by Thursday so that I can go pick up the ornament for my "secret sister."

Have a great Sunday!

I'm relieved that things are better. Thanks for positing and hoping that Thursday comes fast for ya! I just had my Neulasta shot on Friday and am dealing with the body aches. I guess the only consolation is that we know it helps our immunities which is a real good thing!
