Question ?????

I seem to get sick on the third day after treatment on AC. Meds help, but am still down for the 2 days or so. I have 2 more treatments of this, then I get Taxol / Herceptin. Onc said I will not need the Medication Emend anymore. Just the other 2 I am on. Is this true, cuz my understanding is the emend is the best. I won't get this sick on Taxol. Hate to be sick after every treatment which will be once a week for 12 weeks.

    Taxol is not as harsh on one's system as A/C.
    No anti-nausea meds needed for me while on Taxol.

    I'm sorry you are sick on the AC treatment.

    I felt kinda queasy, but other than that, I didn't need/take meds at all during chemo. I am sorry that you are having a hard time of it; Taxol should be easier on your system. Are you drinking plenty of water? It is imperative to keep hydrated and your system flushed, as well.

    Emend with AC
    I kept a little blue book provided by my cancer center that listed all the drugs I was given during the chemo session (filled in and initialed by the chemo nurse). It also had a calender to fill in what drugs I was taking at home, an area for important phone numbers, a place to list my treatment appointments for chemo and rads, and pages and pages to write my treatment questions (and their responses). I am going to find it right now and see if Emend happened all the way through A/C. I don't remember taking Emend with Taxol.

    I'm looking....Ah! I had Emend for all 4 of my A/C treatments, but not for the Taxol. In fact, I received different palliatives (sorry for that word, but my brain can't come up with an alternative) for Taxol, probably because its SEs are different.

    I also remember the same timing as you for reaction to A/C. Luckily my chemo was on Wednesday, so the worse was on the weekend (since I continued working). Taxol was a little easier in some ways, but had other SEs (tingling in toes and fingers, for one).

    If you don't have a counterpart to my little blue book, you could create one. It is really handy to refer back to.

    Chemo Cycle
    Kat, I was on TAC, and took Emend every cycle, along with Zofran and Ativan. I have always suffered motion sickness--have to take Dramamine for every flight--so I knew I'd be taking the anti-nausea meds. After day 4, I was able to take only Zofran as needed.

    I am sorry you get sick each treatment. I know what it feels like. I'd rather have pain than nausea and vomiting. If the meds you're taking don't take care of it, I'd tell the onc. nurse or doctor.

    Good luck with your remaining treatments. The worst (AC) is almost over.

    Hi Kat,
    It sounds like we're on the same plan!

    I just started the Taxol/Herceptin part of my chemo 3 weeks ago & have not taken any (NONE!) post chemo drugs. Like you, on my previous set of chemo, I was on Emend w/2 others prescribed.

    That said, I was really planning on this new set of chemo to be a breeze (compared to the first set) and haven't found it to be as easy as I thought it would be. The nausea is much less and I do not sleep for 3-4 days straight but it is still harsh, fatigue is immense, and I'm finding it a bit difficult to get used to the quick turn around cycle, compared to the 3 week cycle.

    The great news is that it sounds like your 1/2 point is nearing!!! Good for you!

    I took Emend with the A/C and not with Taxol. With Taxol I took Decadron the night before and morning of the treatment.

    I was on taxol/herceptin weekly for 12 weeks. The first couple of treatments I took zofran when I got home ... just to be sure I didn't get sick... but I never felt any nausea so I stopped taking it. It wasn't bad at all. Just minor little side-effects but they were all totally managable.

    I am sorry to hear you are having a bad time with your chemo. I told my medical team at the cancer center that I get sick to my stomach quite easily. They gave me Dexamethason and Lorazepam at night and I took them both for about a week after my first chemo session.

    Talk to your cancer team and see if they can prescribe something different that might work better for you. Like one person stated, you have to force yourself to drink plenty of water maybe even gatorade to help with the electrolytes. Force yourself to eat something to keep your strength up. I know that it easier said than done but you got to keep your strength up or you will get sicker and weaker.

    Just want to say how sorry I am that you are having such a rough time with chemo Kat. But, you are halfway thru. Try to keep that in mind. We are all praying for you!
