First Round of Chemo behind me

I had my first round of chemo this week. What a week it's been. I was supposed to have taxol on Monday through my ip port and it went okay. Had a reaction to the benadryl-restless feeling-but they counteracted with meds. Then I had sharp back pains and arm pains with the chemo, but they handled that well also. Tuesday-I was supposed to have IP chemo-cistplatin, but when they went to inject the chemo I had pain in the area of the port. So they sent me to the Hospital the next day to have a dye test. Seems my port took in the dye but it did not spread into my abdominal cavity. So they have changed my treatment. I will be having carboplatin on day 2. Does anyone know if this works as well as the cistplatin? They wanted me to come for my Neulasta shot on Thursday, but since I travel an hour to have my chemo they gave me a break and let me come today.

I have done nothing but sleep for the past couple days. Today I had diarreah and vomitimg. Tell me how to combat these side effects.

Prayers are welcome.

Cheryl

Sorry to hear you are sick
Dearest Cheryl, You may want to ask them about the 3day emmend for nausea, it helps a lot. I know a lot of people do the taxol/carbo combination and actually carbo and cistplatin are in the same family of drugs. I am sure you will get a lot more answers from the other women who have done IP therapy, I have not had this. Allow your body the sleep it is asking for and stay as hydrated as you can. You may want to ask your nurse about getting extra fluids the day you get your shot that really helps with nausea too.

Sending lots of prayers and gentle hugs Bonnie

    Emend is fabulous!
I also started my chemo this week, Cheryl.

My N.P. told me that Emend Tri-Pack is a miracle and she was correct! No problems with nausea. Some insurances don't cover it but your oncologist can help you to overcome the objection if it's needed because other methods don't work.

My port surgery, carboplatin & taxol were all done the same day (Wed May 6). Other than extreme fatigue day 3 and very achy joints and muscles day 4 (today), all is well. In earlier posts, some ladies suggested L-lysine and L-glutamine supplements to combat the soreness so I started those today.

If you look in the stream "Nausea from Taxol and CARBO" I listed my entire anti-nausea regimen prescribed by my oncologist, it seems to be working for me, at least. I don't hesitate to take notes from the posts on this board and question my Oncologist about the suggestions!

I'm told days 3 & 4 are the worst and then it's uphill until the next treatment. Hopefully, we are both feeling much better soon!

    Have had 2nd chemo
The nausea is a pain. This time I actually got sick. The doctor told me that every time is different and maybe I won't experience it next time. My 3rd chemo is on May 22nd. I am a little worried about my reaction this next time. I guess a good saying is that 'this too shall pass' Sometimes it helps. Hope you're feeling better soon. Terri

Dear Terri, Talk to your oncology team about getting sick ~ there are enough different things to stop that from happening. I know some of them affect us worse than others and lots fo times just getting extra fluids can help the nausea. Maybe you need to go back the second day for extra fluids? Just a thought. Hugs Bonnie

    Nausea
I actually had the Emend but because they had changed my treatment was confused whether to take it or not. Won't make that mistake again. Also, I found out yesterday they forgot to prescribe dexamethasone which they say would have helped me as well.
