Hi, has anyone had any mild muscular soreness around their port? Mine was put in back in January, and I have had no problems since (well, except for the collapsed lung right after it was put in). I have read about possible clots, but my arm and neck feel fine. Just soreness around the port. Any input would be very appreciated.

Hi Moopy, I had soreness the whole time I had the port in. Seems like mine was on top of the muscle. I questioned the doctor and he said it was ok. If you don't feel better call the oncologist. Hugs,Lili

Thank you, Lili. I haven't had soreness before and will call the oncologist if it doesn't go away, as you suggested.

Moopy, I had my port placed
Moopy, I had my port placed about a week before I started chemo back in May 2008. They removed it in September, three weeks after finishing chemo. Now it is February 2009, and the area where they placed the port is still sore. The surgeon who placed the port said that sometimes when someone has a small area between the breast bone and the shoulder that the muscle placement has a tendency to contract, thus causing soreness. I was afraid there was a blood clot, but after an ultrasound they discovered that the muscle was just irritated. Maybe this will help you in dealing with the soreness, but I would let the doctor know you are uncomfortable. Hugs.

    Thanks!
Lili and Judy, you were both absolutely right! We just got back from the ER, where the doctor had an X-ray done and diagnosed "musculo-skeletal pain." Maybe it's not the ideal place to spend a romantic Valentine's Day evening together, but we're sure glad we went.

Peace of mind is everything Joe, and even though it wasn't an ideal way to spend Valentine's Day, at least you know everything is all right. I'm glad, also. Hugs, Lili

    Dear Moopie and Joe,
Peace of mind was probably the best Valentines gift of all. Joe is so devoted to you Moopie and that is worth more than any dinner. It isn't fun to have a worry in the back of your mind. I know because i'm still waiting until Tues. to get an ultra sound on my left subclavical since my arm/hand is swollen they want to check for clots. BUT they thought they could wait until Tues? I'm keeping it elevated and iced until then. On Wed. before my chemo i have to go in to the PT (who didn't have time for me last week and see what i have to have done. I'm getting kinda fed up with these people. My incision scar does not look like others i have seen. it has tucks and loose skin (think he did a poor job of stitching. (He(the surgeon) thinks its fine..when i mentioned it) I also have to do colonoscopy again in March since he didn't finish it last time but sure charged me up the butt for it! (pun intended) I 'm sorry for venting but wonder if they know how we worry. Thank God my Chemo Nurses are darlings and try to help whenever and whatever they can.

I hope your pain gets better Moopie. My port just itches. but i can't scratch it. Geez, we didn't know about all these little and not so little problems that arise did we?

It makes my heart happy to picture you with all of your beautiful flowers from your nephew and the fun you will have with your sister in the next few days. I'm wishing you peace, and love always.

    port
I have had a port since June 2007. I do occasionally have some itching, sometimes slight soreness. When I started chemo I would sometimes have stinging sensation surrounding it, and I was sure it had come loose and was leaking poison into the muscles around it, but the chemo nurses checked it repeatedly, and it was fine. I don't have pain any more, but I still have an "awareness"...kind of like having a bandaid on the inside that I can't get to. I also have a bilateral mastectomy with expanders, so I sometimes think the feelings may be due to the expanders instead. Anyway, I think what you are feeling is probably what comes with the territory, but you should surely talk to the Dr. about it.

    Best wishes, seof

So sorry to hear this, Jackie
I have to admit your colonoscopy joke made me laugh - I had one last summer myself and my sister Jackie just had one this month. I'm sorry that you are having such a time with your arm pain and with the stupid PT and all that waiting. But as long as you can laugh, you are still Jackie, and you will prevail. Joe and I both have you in our hearts and prayers, and hope your tomorrow goes much better!

    Port
On a Sunday in January my arm, jaw and neck swelled up and was very painful. The Dr. thought it was an infection and put me on antibotics. When I went for chemo they could not draw blood and when they injected fluid I had sharp chest pains. The Dr. then sent me for a port study and found I had a clot in the port. I had surgery to remove the port and they put another one on the left side.

Now I am a nervous Nelly, they put me on blood thinners but when they went to draw blood last week this port did not draw either. So I went for another port study and they said it would not draw blood but could be used for the chemo. It also seems like a bigger lump on my neck then the other one.

Has anyone else had problems with their port drawing blood?

    Ugh.
That sounds like an ordeal, Jan. I have not had similar problems, although my port does itch and sting a bit directly after chemo sometimes. A clot is serious business.

Moopy, I'm glad everything is OK after your trip to the ER. The next infusion is coming up so fast for us!

Jan, that happened to a friend of mine. It seems that somehow the port malfunctioned and they couldn't draw out but it could be used to administer the infusion. So as long as it isn't a clot, you will unfortunately get 2 pricks. Let us know how you make out. Hugs, Lili

    Hi Mimi
Hope all goes well with *your* infusion this week! Moopster's big sister Jackie is visiting us for the week, and they are watching a movie with the snoozing pups while a nice big fire is going in the fireplace. Wishing you the same peace and contentment!

Your evening sounds heavenly. Hope you and Moopy have a great visit with Moopy's sister. I am practicing meditation to get ready for Friday. I know I will feel bad for a few days and then it will be better. Good luck to Moopy as well.

It happened to me EVERY TIME!.. with My pic, they had to inject me with "Draino" before they could draw, on my last chemo even that failed so I had to have an IV, what a pain!

    Thinking of You Friday
Hi, Mimi, I will be thinking of you on Friday as we get our infusions--one more down! Jackie, I believe, got a treatment today. My sister's visit has been wonderful, and I started work this week, too. Very tiring, but also good to get back some to my regular routine, as many folks here pointed out.

Thanks again to everyone for information about ports. All of it is good to know.
