My hair is growing back now, and the last time I saw my oncologist, I asked him about dying it because it is all gray (I don't think it was like this before it fell out, but oh well). My oncologist said he wouldn't recommend dying it now because the new hair is very weak, but I didn't press him with more questions about when I can dye it, so I am asking all of you who dye your hair: when was it okay for you to at least use the stuff that doesn't contain peroxide and washes out in a few weeks? How about the stronger dyes?

Thanks.

Ohilly

    Hair dye
Ohilly, My hair also grew back in with alot of grey. I think I waited for about 3 months after chemo before dying my hair with permanent hair color. It turned out fine and it really put a spring in my step to have my golden brown color back!

    hair dye
My hair also grew back almost totally gray. It was a medium brown with very little gray before chemo. I was told to wait at least 6 months before dying it because the new hair is very fragile. My hairdresser used something called a color rinse after about 3 months (right when I had to go back to work) which covered the gray, but was not my exact shade. It is all natural and not harsh on fragile hair. It was a good compromise while waiting for the 6 month time frame.

I dyed my hair pretty soon
I dyed my hair pretty soon after it grew in. No problems. I don't know why they tell you to wait. If your hair is fragile when it leaves your head, it will not strengthen up after being 6 months out of the follicle. As the follicle strengthens, new, stronger hair will leave it. Now, maybe they are worried that the dye will put you back to square one, but even if you wait, eventually that fragile hair that first came out is going to get dyed. Maybe I am just telling myself that because I couldn't stand seeing the new "older" me in the mirror when my hair came back in grey. O'hilly, my hair came back really curly after the first half inch. I am sure you will be beautiful! love, Joyce

    Hair Color
Hi Ohilly, I waited until my hair was about 2 inches long to color it. As I've posted before mine also came in totally gray and very curly. The curls will eventually go away but I wound up with wavy hair. Hugs, Lili
