OSF was set up in 2005 to help cancer patients in central, eastern and northern Maine. We work with CancerCare of Maine to provide gas cards, housing, food, heating oil and other necessities to cancer patients. The area served is mostly rural with low income and high unemployment.
We have assisted CCOM in putting together a resource notebook to be given to new patients. Our board consists of the medical director of CCOM, a radiation oncologist, a pathologist, five cancer survivors, the mother and grandfather of a cancer survivor nad psychologist and a minister. We also provide literature, games and puzzle for use by patients undergoing chemotherapy. We are in the planning stage of having two and three day outdoor adventures for cancer patients and their families, as well as oncology nurses. We bring in speakekrs on various topics such as Sharon Lee Parker, author of "Look Out Cancer, Here I Come", and Ann Murray Page, and her documentary,"Breast Cancer Diaries" OSF is funded entirely from donations and grants, and uses 90% of the funds received for the patients.
We also assist other agencies such as ACS in their events. There are no salaries and most of the expenses are paid by the board.
