2007 Amgen Breakaway from Cancer Tour

This week saw the 2007 Amgen Tour of California bike race rolling through California, from San Francisco to LA. From the Amgen web site:

"The AMGEN Tour of California will bring the drama and excitement of a professional bicycle stage race to the California coast. The world's top professional teams will compete over an eight-day, 700-mile race on a route that includes the California redwoods, wine country and the Pacific Coast.

The tour will also raise funds for cancer care and treatment. Founded in 2005, Breakaway from Cancer™ is a complementary component to Amgen's race sponsorship. Breakaway from Cancer raises awareness and funds to support valuable services and programs, provided free of charge, that help people living with cancer. This year, the initiative will support The Wellness Community and the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship."

This race started last year, just as I was getting ready to start my chemo. I didn't even know what Amgen made. I sent to see the race just because I was a cycling fan.

A year later, I now know that Amgen's Nulasta helped me and many others to stay on treatment schedule during our chemo regimen. It was with a grateful heart that I went to see the race again this year.

And what a race it was. America's Team Discovery was led by Levi Leipheimer of Northern California, Ivan Basso, the 2006 Giro d'Italia winner, and Big George Hincapie, who rode with Lance to 7 victories in Tour de France. Of course, the Lance was here too. He was spotted riding in the Discovery Team car yesterday, riding through San Jose. I must have been within 3 ft of him at one point.
