Removal of tumour on Monday

Hi all!
I've found so much comfort from this board and I'm glad I'm not alone in getting rid of this 'beast' inside of me. I go into surgery on Monday, August 28th, for the removal of the rectal tumour I was diagnosed with back in May 2006. My surgeon said the chance of a temporary ileostomy is over 50% so I'll probably wake up with a bag. I'm not as afraid as I was in the beginning and I look forward to coming home and getting healthy. I'll keep you posted as much as I can on my condition.

Hi Cheryl,

Best of luck with your surgery Monday.

I was diagnosed March of 2004 Stage 3 rectal CA. They sat me up, in the hallway outside the operating room to mark me for "bag" placement. Never happened. Actually, I was very surprised because they told me the tumor was very low. Ya never know.

My advice ( not that you asked) is to drink lots of water and walk, walk, and walk some more.

When I was able to "solo" ( no supervision), I grabbed my IV pole and there was no stopping me. My hospital had a really nice outside patio area. I think I burned track marks in the flooring!!! People thought I was crazy, but I got out of the hospital 4 days before they predicted!!

Cheryl, best wishes to you during your surgery & recovery. Know that your CSN friends will be thinking of you. My husband's had a temporary ileostomy since April. It was to be reversed in July, but we opted for post-surgery chemo, so it won't be reversed for another few months. If you have questions, I'll be glad to talk with you. Prayers for you.......

Perhaps this will motivate you: A couple of months before my surgery, while I was on 24 hr chemo and radiation, my cousin told me that a year from then I would look back and it would be like looking back at a nightmare -- the black cloud over my head would disappear -- I would wake up and be well. There is no reason why you cannot get through this and live a long, active and normal life! I had my surgery, my temporary bag and over 6 months of additional chemo. My port is now out, and NED. The best advice I can pass on is to push yourself as much as possible to get up and walk following surgery (you will not feel like doing it -- but push yourself) -- it will pay off in the long run. You will have ups and downs with the bag, recovering from surgery, and more chemo -- but you will get through this and triumph -- believe it. You will look back in 9 months and see this time as a nightmare and you will be well again. You have lots of support here.
