Done with surgery

My mom had her surgery done yesterday. The surgeon was pretty happy with the results, he said it was a difficult one for him but she did great. He went in to remove the right part of the large intestines, after a year they finally decided my moms primary was her cecum. He said he took that out and he saw a suspicious area in the small intestines so he removed it too. As he put it I took out what we talked about put her back together and hooked her back up. He said he did a lot of biopsies on some leisions in the abdomen and they all came back as scar tissue. Very happy about that. It is a long complicated story as to how we got to this point but the end result is we are through this surgery and hopefully on the road to some form of recovery. Mom has been on xeloda since Nov until we could get some straight answers and he isn't sure which chemo it was but he said something she had did an amazing job. yea!! We were really happy with that. Now we are hoping for as successful a recovery. Today didn't start that well, She looked great after the surgery yeasterday and although I didn't expect her to be running the halls today I wasn't at all ready for the way she felt when we went to see her. She was really down compared to how she has been, so we blamed it on the surgery after all she was operated on less then 24 hours ago is what my brothers said, anyway, she had the epidoral and thought she would be feeling good and of course lied to us that she was, I left after lunch feeling scared, went back after supper and found a totally different person then earlier today, seems her tube for the epidoral came apart and the only thing getting pain medication since last night was the floor. They got that fixed and tonight she seemed much better. She was in so much pain all day today that it even hurt her to move but she never had an epidoral so she didn't know it wasn't normal. She is much "happier" tonight. Now tomorrow I plan to get her moving around. Now of course we are waiting for bowel sounds, hopefully they will be soon. She has the tube down her throat because last year when she had surgery she had many complications including sleepy bowels so this doctor is taking every precaution. Hope tomorrow is better so we can get her on her way. We have an appointment with the oncologist on the 23rd os May to see where we go from here. This has been a long road . A year of mis diaganosis, the wrong chemo treatments, two more opinions, the right treatmen, now hopefully the right surgery. Our oncologist said she is truely an amazing case. I truely believe her strong faith and the unconditional love she has for all of us has got her this far, with a little help from a few good doctors, I only pray there is more left on this earth for her to do. I will continue to keep all of you in my prayers and will probably be looking for some post-op advise here in a few days when we bring her home.

Thanks for listening,

Lisa

    Lisa,
I'm glad to hear the good news about the surgery, especially the news that those worrisome areas were scar tissue. I hope your mom is feeling better today.

Sounds like your mum is doing fine Lisa. Great to hear. Don't be too concerned about how she may look or feel Lisa. Mum has been thru some major surgery which knocks the hell out of the body. Jen told me days later she feared for my life, I looked that bad!!So did my mate and his wife. It seems that post op there are many ups and downs until the body begins to return to some normality....kinda like a post traumatic stress. Some times you feel great then all of a sudden the body feels terrible. It is all part of the process and not always an indication that something is wrong. All in good time Lisa..she will gradually improve..just takes time. She will almost certainly feel better once home(hospital post op is the pits....true rest is almost impossible) Let us know her progress. Our very best, luv n huggs, kanga n Jen

Sounds as though things are going really well. Congratulations to all of you for the great results. Healing takes a long time. Remember, exercise is important post surgery--gravity is the bowel's best friend.
