I was diagnosis with Multiple Myeloma in May 2004 at UAMS. After going through Total Therapy III, I have no sign of cancer in my body. I will finish up my consolidation in May one year after the diagnosis. My chance of a long remission looks good. Velcade is a good drug and I think that is the key along with a dual "stem cell transplant".

Hello J. Crowell,
First off, I'd like to say congrats on being in full remission! My mother (60 years old) just completed her second stem cell transplant at UAMS and now she's back home. They're asking her to return in a couple of weeks for one more consolidation therapy. I have to say, she's a bit discouraged right now. For one, she got really sick shortly after returning home... she developed several blood clots in her lungs and both legs. She had to be readmitted to the local hospital here for a week, but now she's home and taking Warafin. She's slowly recovering from the clots, although she gets shortness of breath pretty easily just from walking from one end of the house to another. And every few days she'll struggle with diarrhea. Did you have any of these complications? How'd you manage to get through them? If you have any insight, please email me back at your earliest convenience. Once again, congrats and I will keep you in my thoughts.
