Stage IV Renal Cell Cancer

My mother-in-law was recently diagnosed with stage IV renal cell cancer. She was not experiencing any pain at all. One day, she started getting a very bad headache, was taken to the hospital, and they performed a CT scan. At that time they found 5 tumors in her brain. After doing a bone scan, they stated that she had tumors on her kidney, in her liver, lungs, and lymph nodes. They started her on radiation (on her brain) and steroids immediately. My concern is, they did a biopsy on her liver, and it came back negative.......strange!!!!! We asked the doctor about that and she stated that sometimes that does happen because they might have performed the biopsy on a dead part of the tumor. My question is.....could there be a chance that these could be noncancerous tumors. I know that I am probably living in fantasy land, but I would appreciate someone writing me back to let me know if this is common. DZig31@aol.com Thanks, Cindy

Cindy, My husband was diagnosed with stage IV RCC, 11 months ago. He has mets to the lung and the liver. So far no spread to the brain or bone. I can't answer your question but I just wanted you to know that I am sorry. We were told very early on that RCC is a tough cancer. My husband has been through two surgeries, on his third type of treatment. We recieved some wonderful news this past week. The current treatment, after two rounds has shrank his tumors by 75%. It is a stage 2 study, combination of 2 drugs called Xeloda and Gemzar. These studies and clinical trials have a criteria that the patients have to meet. Sometimes brain and bone involvement prevent them from being in these studies. But its worth asking your doctor about. My husband is 46 years old, never sick a day in his life other than the common cold etc. He was already in stage IV before any symptoms occured. I wish you all the luck and my prayers go out to you.
