I was dx. with DCIS in Aug. Had lumpectomy in Aug. then, mastectomy on Sept. 11 with TRAM flap reconstruction. I was not given the option to remove my left breast. I'm taking tamoxifin for 5 years with hope that that's enough. I'm doing well. Hopefully returning to work as a physical therapist on Nov. 1.Then, tennis again soon after. I can't wait to resume my normal life again. I'd love to talk to you. write back! cruf RPT1206@aol.con

DCIS left breast, mastectomy with no lymph node invasion. I was told right breast just needs to be followed every 6 mos for 1 year then annual since DCIS is supposed to be site involved only. Msblackfin@aol

Hi there,
I was diagnosed with DCIS last November...underwent left mastectomy on Dec. 12. Was told no follow up needed and was put on five years of tomoxefin to protect remaining breast. I just can't bring myself to remove my good breast at this time, however I do know many women do have that done for peace of mind. It is an individual choice I think. Good luck to you.

I am in the very same situation just a little further down the road. I had a mestectomy two weeks ago. I'll be happy to share what I'm doing, my discussions with my docs and my current game plan. I've never used a chat room before, so I'm not really sure what I'm doing.

Hi, this is my first time in a chat room. How are you doing? I am so sorry you had to go through this. I was just diagnosed 2 weeks ago with DCIS and my surgeon is recommending Mastectomy. I have a 2nd opinion set up for this friday. My gut is telling me to have a double mastectomy because I am pretty young (40) and have young children and I can't deal with the emotional and psychological stuff down the road. I just started researching so I am probably jumping the gun but this is what my gut is telling me. Was wondering and looking for advice from other women going through the same thing. Thanks:)

Welcome, seriously!

This thread post is old ... from 2000 and 2002 so they probably won't respond.

I had DCIS in my left breast and opted for a double MX for a variety of reasons. I was 39 when diagnosed, my mother was dying from BC, I had extremely dense breast tissue which would have made diagnosis difficult in the future; my gut was telling me the same thing.

Listen, read, if you pray, pray and in the end do what feels right to you. That's all we can do.

Best of luck and welcome to these boards. You'll find a lot of support here.

...if I had to do it over again, I would have had a mastectomy instead of a lumpectomy with radiation. I completed radiation (33 treatments) on 5/28. Today, it is 8/12. I am STILL fighting fatigue and soreness. The soreness is to be expected. I had 2 surgeries. I have a very small half moon scar over my left nipple. Think about it...as my friend said...they radiated your body. You have radiation poisoning...

I chose not to go on tamoxifen. I am having an MRI and mammogram every 6 months for 2 years, then every 6 months a MRI then 6 months later a mammogram for 3 years. I had a 2nd opinion, and both onc. felt I was having solid follow-up and the tamoxifen would be overkill. One more thing I don't have to put in my body.

I realize that had I had a mastectomy, I would be dealing with the trauma of losing a breast. But, hey, I'm done with them anyway. My kids are grown. And with an implant, they could be a bit bigger and they would never sag.

Radiation was nothing, it's the side effects that do you in. My rad. onc. tells me they can last up to one year. Yuck.

e-mail me at dcissurvivor@hotmail.com is you want to talk.

take care,
Betsy

I was diagnosed with DCIS on May 5 2010. At first it was believed that I had only one small spot, but then an MRI revealed another and this one was slightly bigger. The panel run on it showed hormone negative, comedo/necrosis. So, there I was with an aggressive cancer with no interest in hormones, and now two spots. I am small breasted so a lumpectomy was no longer an option. What I decided maybe it was overkill but it was my decision to just get a bilateral mastectomy. At first the insurance was all against it but in the end they were persuaded and I had it done July 16. I'm glad I did it. maybe taking the left wasn't necessary, maybe I'll never know. But, I just feel better knowing that I eleminated a huge risk of ever having it come back. yeah there is always that chance but, now it's less of a chance. This is a very personal decision. I've known people who just had lumpectomy and radiation and never another problem.
Cancer is different with each person. There is no cut and dried answer. Go with your gut, it's all you really can do.

I was dx with dcis in dec 09. I had 2 lumpectomies (second one to get larger clear margins). Then 33 radiation treatments and I am now taking arimidex for 5 years. I will have my first mammo since surgery in Oct.

chemo - 18 weeks - no radation, bi-lateral mac'tmy - and reconstruction. Herceptin chemo for 1 year .. ER/PR negative, so I do not have to take any oral medication once my herceptin in completed - in early September 2010.

Best of Luck .. and yes, I also went for 2nd opinion -

Hi,
I am 50 almost 51 and was diagnosed last Dec. right after Christmas. I HAD DCIS on the right side and invasive DCIS on the left side. On Feb 4th I had a bi-lat mastectomy with reconstruction. I had 7 lymph nodes taken out on the left side. A few weeks later they went in and cleaned up the margins on the left side. I had the Oncotype DX test with a score of 12 so I did not have Chem or radiation!!!! YEAH for me. I had my implants in on June 14th, so I am about 8 weeks out. I am a Kindergarten teacher and took 8 weeks off for the mastectomy. I was scheduled for 6 and my Superintendent convinced me to take the next 2 off. The biggest problem that I have had is "not feeling or looking sick". I have had great support from my families(both personal and school). I can't believe that I am saying this but this is something that we can get through!

and that was a no-brainer for me....a mastectomy. Because the size of the tumors were so small, I didn't qualify for chemo or rads. The down side was I am 3+, and I got knocked off the Herceptin train as well. But. I am four years out, still NED. I still have the one breast, and it is still "normal". Prophylactic mastectomy choices are as individual choices as the disease itself. Whichever you choose will be the right choice for you.
