I begin radiation October 9. My radiation oncologist has given me a list of possible side effects, I've looked at the list on this site, but what have been the personal experiences of all of you who have had radiation? Have a good day, everyone!

Hi Ellen. I had six weeks of radiation therapy and I experienced none of the side effects that were listed. I even regained some of my energy. I had the burn to my chest area and that was it. As far as I am concerned, radiation was an almost pleasant experience. It takes longer to get ready for it than for it to be done. It's quick, the techs were fabulous, very friendly. The Radiology Oncology suite was a very upbeat place to be.

Hi Ellen! I took 33 radition treatments and I did not have any side effects. I had a little burning mark on my chest and my neck, but it was not that bad. After a few weeks, I felt a little drained, but that could have been becauses I just went back to work when my treatments started. I hope everything comes out ok with your treatments. Just keep a positive attitude and the time will fly by. Take care!

I am expecting radiation to be scheduled in a few weeks. it is sure good to read these comments which take away some of the fears. my worst problem is that i have to go so far for treatment - about 2 hrs on the bus each way each day. i am going to find out about a lodge where patients getting treatment can stay, but that will give me a huge amount of time upon my hands. i'm a writer - believe it or not! - so i think i will plan to begin writing a book during the long hours of waiting. thanks for all the encouragement i find at this site! susan from beautiful british columbia, canada

Are you aware that the ACS has a volunteer group called Road to Recovery? The volunteers take patients to and from their appointments. I participate in this in the Houston area and find it very rewarding for me. It helps the patient to have someone to talk to and to not have to worry about catching a bus, fighting traffic, etc. We have some volunteers who spend a whole day transporting one patient to and from. Check into it. It might help.

Hi Ellen-

I was extremely tired and exhausted as the weeks of radiation went on and on. I had 5 radiation sessions per week for six weeks. Also, the last 5 sessions were boosters, and I was ever so burned. I had blisters around the nipple which opened up and were bleeding. I was given medicated patches with which burn victims are treated as well as a burn ointment.

Had I known then what I know now, I would have declined radiation treatments. But as with everything in life, we have to make choices with what we know at that time.

Ellen, you will be in my prayers.

From the heart,

Kat
