hi! actually bone marrow biopsy is not really that painful i've been through it twice, the part that I don't like is when they inject the anesthetic and when it touches the bone it feels annoying and slightly painful, but after that as soon as they insert the straw like tool to extract the bone marrow it feels ticklish, i was even laughing while they were extracting the marrow because Im a ticklish person :)

2-3 Biopsies Per Year

My wife has been dealing with MM since November 2005. She has undergone at least 2 biopsies every year. Her most recent was just a month ago. She tells me that they are not really painful, but rather an annoyance. For every one she has had only the local numbing shot and the needle biopsy. As in life and everything we do, it seems the mental anguish and anticipation is usually far greater than the real experience.

I can only comment on own experience. In must have been very fortune as when they did mine
it was considered an operation. I was in a operating room for about 30 minutes and they did a biospy plus took a small chip of bone. had a atheologist and the Dr. plus 3 other people in the room. Overall it was not a bad experence as my hip had a slight ache for 4 or 5 days.But the best part about the above was that I was out for the whole time. Won,t know the results for a while but I,ll try and get back with you then.

Hello, I have had 3 in the last 10 months. Actually what I find most painful are the initial couple of lidacane (spelling) that deaden the area. Feels like a hefty bee sting. The actual biopsy is more of a psychological battle for me...I work myself up to think it is going to be terrible and then it never is. When the aspiration is done there is a wierd and uncomfortable sensation. Not sure I would call it pain but you certainly know something is being done. I certainly don't look forward to them (have another to do in a little over a month) but I no longer totally freak out over having to have one. I try just to relax as much as possible...my doctor is very efficient and it is all over in just a very few minutes. Good luck I hope you have a "gee, it wasn't that bad" experience.

I usually frequent the "colon cancer" discussion group. Now that I have been "cancer free" for almost a year now, my husband is facing a possible diagnosis of multiple myeloma. He has his bone marrow biopsy on Wednesday. I remember hearing people say that this is extremely painful. Apparently, he will receive NO sedation. Any thoughts out there? Perhaps because of what I've been through, I'm scared for him. Cheryl
