Hip surgery

Hi Everyone,

Is there anyone on this board that had hip replacement surgery? Did you have lots of pain after surgery, and during your physical theraphy? Just curious. Right now the pain in my hip is tolerable. Just wondering for the future. Thanks

    I never had hip replacement and hope I never have too. I hear it is rather painless today,except for the usual recovery time after the operation. I am sure every surgery has some discomfort. First thing I think of when someone says hip replacement is that commercial on tv for the class action suit against a particular hip replacement manufacturer. I can't remember the name of the company but I am sure you have seen it. Its a bunch of lawyers talking about a class action suit(Its all about the lawyers getting rich and the victims winding up with nothing) Getting a little off the subjet,but whenever you hear class action suit it ends up the lawyers need a brinx truck to haul their cut and you can carry yours in your watch pocket.LOL.It is terrible with all the scams going on. I think I should have been a lawyer or a politician or just a medical insurance salesman. What do you thunk? John(FNHL-1-4A-5/10)

    Hi Maggie,

    In Nov 2006 I had a double hip replacement, yup, both done at the same time. Prior to surgery I had had pain and lots of trouble walking for about 18 months. By the time I had the surgery I pretty much couldn't walk and was on very heavy duty pain meds, but still in pain. The day after the surgery I was up walking, not pretty, and totally off all pain meds, my choice. So to answer your question, for me there was no pain and life is so much better.

    However, I did develope a problem with my left hip and have chosen not to do further surgery. And the road wasn't easy. As I have RA I'm pretty much used to living with some degree of pain. I was diagnosed right after my one year anniversary with my lymphoma.

    Best advice is to interview lots of docs, go with the one your most comfortable with. Your Surgeon should only do hips and knees and not do general orthopedics as the more you do the better it should go. Hip and knee surgery is a numbers game.

    Two years ago my 85 year old aunt..(who has cancer), had both hips done...(not at the same time). She had one hip done in April and the next hip done 3 months later in July. She came through it fantastically well and is so glad she had it done. I stayed with her through both surgeries and she only had minimal pain the week after surgery. She did well with her P.T and healed great. She has a big two story house and does all of her cleaning and yard work on her own. She even shovels her driveway after it snows, and this year she said she has done a ton of shoveling. Hip surgery is pretty common and most folks do really well afterwards.     Hi Sue,

    I love hearing success stories. I am not near the point of having surgery. I figured let me get my facts straight ahead of time. What great news about your aunt, 85 years old and shoveling snow, wow, LOL.

    Dear John,

    As always, your posts always puts a smile on my face. You are so right about all the class action suits on every channel on TV. A little bit scary. There are scans for everything imaginable. John you are too nice a person to be a lawyer.

    Hi Leslie,

    I was looking for your post about hip replacement surgery for both hips. Couldn't find it.

    I am not ready for surgery just yet. But, when the times comes, you can be sure I will do my homework. Great idea from you, only go to a doctor that does hips and knees only.
