increased mucous production during and after eating

my dad was recently diagnosed with esophageal cancer the beginning of december and decided to bring him home and spend quality time with him. doctors gave him 2 weeks without treatment and 6 months with treatment. for the past week he has had increased mucous production and coughing during and after eating and the foods are pureed. up till now he's been able to eat solid foods. does anyone have any suggestions or have had the same problem- pattyo

    he was diagnosed with a barium swallow and living in buffalo ny we went to roswell which is a cancer center- we were told that he needed brain surgery and there was a possibility he wouldn't survive the surgery due to his age and general condition- he had lost 20-25lbs at that time and we weren't ready to lose him on the surgery table and choose to take him home. at 84 we couldn't see him going thru chemo and wanted to spend quality time with him - it has been 3 weeks since he has been diagnosed and he is weaker and uses a walker now and sleeps alot - hospice has come in to help - but he still get up and cares for himself showers etc. what is stage ivb- i know stage iv is with mets and his cancer has spread to his brain, liver and lungs- thanks for the suggestion for the shake- i'll pick up some whey protein-and i'll talk to the hospice nurse about mucinex- pattyo

    thanks for your reply- you seem well educated on the subject- its ironic that loretta's friend worked on a oncology unit and ended up with cancer herself.
    we moved my parents back home last christmas because of the workload my father had caring for their large home and being the primary caretaker of my mom - she has end stage COPD. They sold their home and built a new home back in new york. My dad just finished putting the house together-deck on the back, shed built, and just bought snowblower before he got ill. i know god was watching over us because my sister and i live within minutes of my parents new home and together we are caring for both our parents now.
    yes, i question if we made the right decision for my dad- it is sad watching him fade away- he's lost so much weight and has become so weak. But couldn't imagine putting him through brain surgery and chemo at 84. My sister's and i feel blessed that dad has been healthy up till now.
    The hospice nurse said that patients with brain tumors usually die in their sleep and that is what we are hoping for. Thanks again for your prayers and support its appreciated- pattyo
