Axillary Ultrasound

Hi All,
I am new, just joined today. I was diagnosed with DCIS about 4 weeks ago. I was hoping someone might be able to give some thoughts on this issue. I have had a biopsy that confirmed stage zero DCIS - thanking God we caught it early. I have had a consult with the genetisist(sp), I had an MRI done this past Tuesday and now, 3 days later, the doctor calls me and wants me to have a left axillary ultrasound. Does anyone have any experience with this? I tried calling my doctor but the office was closed and the answering service really doesn't want to bother the doctor on call unless it is an emergency.
I appreciate any help any of you can give me. I am very positive about it all, especially since my cancer is nothing compared to what some of you are going through. I have a sister that had a mastectomy in Nov. for agressive ductal carcinoma, so again mine is small potatoes compared to others but I am starting to think there might be something worse.
Thank you all,
Cathy

    Welcome, Cathy
Cathy, I'm assuming an axillary ultrasound is an ultrasound of the axillary lymph nodes, but I myself have no experience with that, so I got nuthin' -- I just wanted to welcome you, and say that I'm glad you found us.

The women and men here have such a wealth of experience -- I know someone will be along soon who can shed some light on this.

    Cathy welcome to
the bc network. I'm sorry you had to find us though. My sister just had a stereostatic MRI biopsy this afternoon. She is a 9 year DCIS survivor. My best guess is the ultrasound will look at images of your axilla lymph node system. Usually ultrasounds are painless. I've had several for different parts of my body. Try not to worry even though the waiting is the hardest part.

I can't add much but wanted to welcome you. I know there will be someone soon that will have an answer for you. I had IDC and mine too was caught early so that is good. A positive attitude is also a great thing too, Glad you found us and I am sure you will be too. God Bless

perhaps they want to see if
perhaps they want to see if anything looks suspicious in your nodes. Just to check. i am not sure how early it has to be before they check the sentinel nodes with surgery.

Welcome! I've not had a separate ultra sound for the axillary node, mine was looked at in my original test. But, don't ever feel as though your cancer is "small potatoes". Thank heaven they/you caught it early but it's still cancer. May this and any other tests you have bring nothing but great results! Best wishes, Marsha

    Hi Cathy!
I'm glad they caught your cancer so early. I don't want to cause you any unnecessary worry but the radiologist told me that my lymph nodes looked completely normal in my ultrasound but I ended up having 5 of 17 positive for cancer. I was a stage 3A so hopefully with yours being stage zero, you won't have any lymph node involvement. You may eventually need a sentinel node biopsy. It's good that they are investigating every possibility. Hang in there and try not to worry.

    Hugs!
