My RAI treatment is set for July 9th. Here's my question I had my surgery on May 6th took everything out as it did come back cancer so I have been off my thyroid meds for a while now. My back feels like it is seizing up in my muscle areas. Anyone else have this and is there any relief? Sometimes it feels like its going to just snap. I can deal with the other aches and not sleeping well because of them but this is the hardest.

Thanks

It sounds like you are in the midst of one of the toughest parts of this process: post-surgery, increasingly hypothyroid in preparation for a whole-body scan, and under a lot of stress.

You still have a lot of healing to undergo, and the decreasing amount of T4 (Synthroid, Levoxyl, etc) in your body does not help -- because T4 is needed by every cell in the body in order to run a host of metabolic processes, including those involved in cell production and wound healing.

Unless you have a preexisting and underlying back problem, it may 'feel worse' because of the stress of surgery, recovery, lack of movement due to pain or lethargy, or depression. Hypothyroidism, especially after a few weeks without T4, causes all sorts of strange sensations, fatigue, sleeplessness, irritation, restlessness, and other annoyances.

I understand what you're going through; I'm currently very hypo and following the LID in preparation for my six-month follow-up scan.

Hang in there and things will get better.

    Thanks Grove,

    Thanks Grove,
It helps to know this is "normal"..lol. I am getting very fatigued and some stress. I have 3 girls, 19 ,14, and 12. The oldest just graduated and is not handled this well. Her answer is to move out with no job and go live with her boyfriend instead of helping me. She has a fear of becoming like her father which is to live off everyone else but I fear that this is something she will regret. I just can't deal with that now so I try to leave it in God's hands. After all she was a gift to me from him so I have to just let him lead her.

that is a part of being hypo
I had a lot of muscle aches and pains when hypo. Heat and ibuprofen helped a lot! Good luck with your RAI!

    It's so tough
My 14 year old dd handled things so well. My 19 yo son who was already on academic probation was suspended for a semester at college because of his grades and he felt that my diagnosis played a part in it. My husband is on medication and seeing a therapist because of panic attacks and depression caused by my diagnosis. Me...I'm trying to be strong and deal with everything, putting my faith in God, but feeling like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders! Here's hoping that your daughter figures things out!

    Thanks Weberdns,

My 14 and 12 year old are handled this great. They make sure I don't need anything and I have very little trouble out of them. My Husband is doing o.k. I can tell he thinks about it alot and doesn't want to step up and do what I do though like deciding what to eat for them cause I'm eating different stuff and what to buy at the grocery store. I think it scares him to do that like if he does something bad will happen. Hurt doesn't even descripe what I feel with my oldest right now but I try not to let it affect me. For once in my life I have to put myself before them. It's alittle hard cause I have never done that. I have found that Icy Hot and Advil to seem to help though, thanks for the advice. On top of this my Thyroid surgeon found dark fluid behind my eardrum and asked about bleeding tumors running in my family. I don't think this is related as I've had this ear problem for about 3 years now. He also said I probably have sleep apthea since I have been snoring loudly and waking myself up since the surgery. Said it looks alittle crowded in there when looking up my nose and down my throat...lol.

    well if you have sleep
well if you have sleep apthea you should get it diganosed and mabey get an annoying c-pap machine... will definatly increase your energy levels and may even save your life if your apthea is sever enough.

personaly i found a hot tub and massage therapy helped me through the pain.

I dont know if it relates to you by my Dr's didnt want me takeing advil and told me the only pain med i should be useing is Tylenol do to the surgerie ( i had a few diffrent surgeries for other things also during that time so i dont know if its relevant)

you should also see an ENT about your ear problem. hopefully its something simple and fixable may make things easyer

    Nasher, going back to the
Nasher, going back to the ENT doc 6wks after RAI treatment for an audio test and frontal lobe cat-scan for the ear. C-pap machine and annoying should always go in the same sentence together as far as I'm concerned..lol. Still hoping it has to do with some swelling(praying) so that I don't have to do that test.
