They don't mean to be funny, but they are

With medications, comes room for funny things to come out of the mouths of the ones we care for most....they don't mean to be funny, but they are. I try not to laugh when they are said, but bring them up as jokes later.

Some things my mom has said:

1. Rock-croaches, instead of cockroaches

2. Zippity-zappity-zoo, instead of Bippity-boppity-boo (from disney's Cinderella fairy godmother)

3. Refers to her suppository as "The MISSLE", because of its shape

Does anyone else out there have a funny to share??

I know my kids have been laughing at me. I told my nine year old to brush her face before she went to bed the other night meaning her teeth of course. And I am only taking pain medicine occasionally!

    is it okay
Should I feel bad for laughing at the funny things? I hope you don't think so...I worry sometimes that it's insensitive of me.
I laugh because I feel so bad that my mom's mouth doesn't say what she wants it to say or that her brain can't control what comes out, and she doesn't allow any crying to happen in front of her.
I started this thread thinking maybe other people had heard "funnies" and my mom wasn't the only one, but so far I only got your response. I hope it hasn't offended people..that wasn't my intention. But sometimes we need to laugh the pain away, even at a chuckle at a time.

    Alright to laugh
I can empathize with your situation. My aunt is 95 and she does not have long to be here. I go to visit my aunt 4 days a week who is in a paliative care unit. Yesterday I read about 4-5 stories from Chicken Soup for the Soul.It felt good to hear her laugh. The stories are about one or two pages, and they usually ended up with a cute ending. My aunt chuckled over maybe 3 of these stories. So now I am looking for some very short stories with a funny ending, enough to give my aunt a chuckle or two in her last days.

    ok to laugh
My aunt passed away last night at 1 a.m. I am feeling okay with the fact that we were able to laugh at the short stories that I read to her last week. I will be able to keep it in my memories and look back at it later as something precious that we shared together in her final days.

    Hey AKAngel,
You are all over the boards aren't you? I am trying to remember some of the funny things dad would say under the influence of his pain meds morphine and oxycodone.

Out of nowhere one morning, he looked around the room, looked back at me and mom, and said...mmmmm I'm hungry!! now he was eating very little the last few days, so mom and I were thrilled to hear this. We said, what would you like to have? He was so cute, he said ummmmm some chocolate cupcakes with the white swirlies on top! We laughed and said ok. He had 2, enjoyed them completely. That was the last thing he had to eat before he passed away.

He wanted to go sit by the front door in the sun, so mom and I helped him up and placed him in his chair by the door. He looked at us and said....Hey! Put my NRA hat on me Captain! he was laughing the whole time.

The day he passed away, he kept telling us he had to use the bathroom. We knew he didn't because he was quite dehydrated. We said, ok and helped him to the bathroom. He had to sit down to go, and of course couldn't, he looked down and said...Come on "you stinker!". We laughed about that comment for days afterward.

Thanks Angel for posting this. It has made me remember quite a few fond memories, and put a smile on my face!

    You made me smile
Of course I'm everywhere....Angels are never tied down to one spot.
Thank you for sharing your dad's stories. Isn't it funny how the mind will still believe in a process (like voiding) even when it also knows that there's no way it's going to happen? My mom constantly goes into the bathroom, to sit and wait for her "eureka" (bm), but because she barely eats, she barely goes. She's stuck in a loop of what was, when she used to eat regularly in decent amounts, and expects her body to put out just the same. I wish I could get her to laugh more. I'm glad your dad could leave you with a smile; it's a great memorial.

    Humor is the best medicine
I don't know how I would get through the day without humor. those verbal scrambles are constantly pouring out of my mouth. My kids (5 & 7) crack up. Humor, happiness, joy, gratitude are all so positive. I think doing something that makes you laugh should be part of daily treatment regimen. I notice some responses do take a little time. I was surprised too. This is my first time participatingnin a discussion board. I guess it depends on who catches your discussion thread. Hang in there and keep laughing!

I too get letters of words so mixed up!! And I wasn’t on medication when I said these. Once I was freaking out because we were suppose to get a lot of rain and I said to my co-worker “Oh no! My fludder suds!” (translation: “my cellar floods”) Another time I was riding in the car with my boyfriend on a drizzly afternoon and I said “Look at all the faggy potches” (translation: “foggy patches”). The best one? I had gotten a new vest and it had buttons with chains going across the front and I came out and said “How do you like my chest veins?” (vest chains) I won’t repeat the responses! LOL I’m so glad I’m not alone with my psychobabble and laughter is one of the best medicines! Thanks everyone!

When the lady comes to give
When the lady comes to give my mom her bath, my mom refers to her nether-regions as Howard. Luckily, we don't know a Howard. Or else I'd start asking questions!

    Sad News delivered with humor
We were in the Oncologist office today to receive the sad news that the cancer has invaded by husbands spinal fluid, which led to talk of hospice. I looked over at my husband and saw that his eyes were closed and his head lowered. I said to the doctor and my daughter, He is so sad, and I started to cry thinking he was crying. After a few minutes of sobbing I looked back over at my husband and said, wait a minute, I think he is sleeping. Upon which my husband eyes popped open and we all started to crack up laughing. The doctor turned to my husband and said, don't worry we did not make any important decisions while you were napping.....

    Humor...
Such funny stories! I suppose the Lord sends us "comic relief" at these times. My daughter and I still giggle at some of the things my beloved said in his last days! The one that we still feel bad about, but still makes us giggle is: the Saturday before he passed, he was weak and not doing well. We took the "top" and the "bottom" to bathe him. Of course, I took the "bottom". After I was done with the bottom, we attempted to put a t-shirt on his "top". I had put his favorite "baseball" flannel jammy pants on him, so my daughter pulled out a red t-shirt. As we struggled to put the shirt on, with him even trying to help, my daughter who was in front, starts laughing! I say, what? She says, I'm awful, but daddy looks like buddha! The shirt she had chosen was too small, as my dear husband's tummy was very swollen. She says, look for yourself, it was funny! As little as he was speaking, he tells us to stop teasing him! So now we have to pull the shirt off, but in our hysterics, we end up leaving it on his head! He now tells us, you guys are really P*****g me off! Eventually, we did dress him, administered his pain meds and put him comfortably to bed.

My sweet daughter and I know that if "daddy" had been all there, he would have laughed harder than we did!

    They call it "Chemobrain"
This post made me laugh, my mom and aunt would always say CHEMOBRAIN after they would realize what they said made no since at all. So here's a funny one: my mom ask me to run to the store and buy her some vitamins. So I bought her "women's one a day"I get home and give them to her. About ten minutes later she comes out of her room holding the vitamins and her glasses, she looks at me and says "Kenny, I think I need new glasses,i can see where it says women's one a day, but I can't find anything on here where it says how many times a day I'm supposed to take'em" That memory always puts a smile on my face.

Dark humor, maybe, but my grand-niece recently learned about death. She's just four years old, and her mom explained to her how we don't go on forever, but move on to a better place. She got so sad, and she thought on it a long time. She finally said: If granny died, I would cry and cry all day and all the next day, and the day after that I'd take her out and put in her the compost bin.

    From the mouths of babes
My 3 year old granddaughter was also learning about death when my beloved old dog was in his last days. I told her that he was going to go to heaven with God, up in the sky with the beautiful stars. A few days later she was riding in my car and said "Meme, Duke's going to heaven?" and I said Yes and she said "with God, and his brother Oh my God?" Hee hee!! I almost went off the road!
