    Hi Laurissa
sorry this is so late but wanted to add my 2 cents in here. I have had fake nails since 1992!! And I certainly did not quit during chemo. I noticed absolutely zero difference in my nails - probably because I couldn't see them. They still look beautiful to this day! hahaha, I guess I cheated. I always do the pink and white.

There's truth in keeping nails coated
I did pretty much the same thing, Tracy. My nail tech suggested taking off my old tips and putting a thin layer of 'fill' over top. I have continued to do that and haven't had the slightest problems with my nails. I haven't wanted to post this because I guess I didn't want to make you feel worse, but after Tracy posted, I wanted to validate this because perhaps it holds some truth. Trial & error... we just never know what lies ahead in the way of new findings :)

    nails falling off
omg! i am so glad i found this website - in fact i found it because i was freaking about my nails and did a search for taxotere and cytoxan side effects. it's still crappy that this is happening to me, but now i know i am not the only one (some of my friends look at me like i have done this to myself)

    Oh yes
Just as you described they still are about 1/2 done seems like they are drying up. My lst chem was oct. 09. 8 of 10 nails still look bad. Toes nails not so bad, they say to keep your hands out of water....right.... I figure thats why my toes arn't in as bad of shape.

    water
I think you're right about the water. Its pretty much impossible to keep them dry all of the time. I took a lot of baths during treatment, and I'm wondering if this is what caused this "rare" side effect. Mine seem to be drying up as well now. One and a half fell off.

    fake nails
I don't know about the fake nails helping. I think you're probably just lucky. They say that the nails falling off is rare. If it is fungus (no one has confirmed that with lab tests), they say that fake nails and even nail polish are bad.

Just went to my Podi. cuz three of my toe nails on R side have fallen off, just like yours. I finished chemo Dec. 1st. started turning white at the bottom lifted and fell off. He said just keep them filed like you are doing, it happens with chemo and they will grow back. I hate that cuz I'm going on a much needed cruise next month, and and I got ugly feet:( oh well, guess we can't be pretty every where...the ugly got to come out somewhere...HA HA. Angel

I am so sorry Laurissa for

    Nail report
So far I still have all my nails. The white tips have gotten lower and I hope it stops soon. Its like half of my nail is white tips, looks odd. My two big toenails are in bad shape too.

    white tips
Hi Laurissa. I've noticed that my loose nails actually have new nails growing underneath them. Its taken about 2 months to grow maybe an 1/8". The new nails do look healthy though.

    from tip to cuticle
Maybe we could bring back the "Michael Jackson Silver Glove Look"!!

My nails are full of ridges from tip to cuticle but they start breaking from side to side just far enough back that you can't trim them without cutting half your finger off. However, one thumb nail split right down the middle. Now how do you trim that one?

    Man, isn't chemo an adventure??

Anyone's ears fell off yet?? LOL

    LOL Sharon!

    LOL Sharon!

Laurissa, I am a nail tech going through chemo. My nail beds are turning dark and a little tender. I take a B vitamin called Biotin. I take 5000 mcg a day. It helps rebuild the Keratin in our skin, hair and nails. I do wear acrylic overlays to keep my nails strong. I also use cuticle oil on my nails and cuticles to keep them moisturized. You can also get a nail strengthner, such as Sally Hanson to put on them. Apply to coats to clean nails, apply polish and then apply strenghtner daily. Remove all coats weekly, shape with a file not an emery board, and repeat process.

You don't trim them. Go to like Sally Beauty and get some silk strips and some brush on nail glue. Apply the strip to clean nail over split and apply the glue. Let dry. You can use several layers of silk and then the glue. It will work as a bandage on the nail. Buff out roughness with a soft grit buffing block, 240 grit. You will not see the silk, it will look just like a natural nail. Ask the sales person at the store for help. I use Sally Beauty because there are so many and they go through training for this. A good nail tech should be able to help too. If you have questions call me at 620-344-5104.

    Cruise

Angel 46, go to a nail tech that applies acrylic overlays. They can build you toe nails that look natural and will stay on long enough for your cruise. My sister had to have a toe nail removed from the root because of being ingrown all the time. I build her a toe nail all summer long so she can wear sandals and have nice toes. Use lots of cuticle oil on nails and cuticles. It helps to keep them moist. It also keeps them from getting soft from absorbing water. I am a nail tech so I learned a lot from trial and error on my own nails. I have been doing nails for 10 yrs and do my own.Call if you have questions, 620-344-5104.
