awww. i am here guys. i was fighting an intestinal bug for a couple days, and then i could not get on line at all with my computer for a couple days. i have been trying all day to pull up the discussion boards. i also have a ton of emails and face book messages to answer, apparently everyone wants to know where i have been. sometimes, i suspect my room is like a black hole. a friend said he was texting me for two days and i did not get those either. thank you both for your concern. i appreciate it. now let's see if i can get anything else to come up.

    glad you are ok
Glad you are doing ok Sweetblood. Yes this site is wonderful. I started off here being so afraid and crying. Now I am so much stronger. When I had my ENT appt. the doctor told me I was doing so good with all of this, I was asking her questions and I wanted to know every thing about my surgery. All because I have learned so much on here from all of you.

mary, i am so proud of how far you have come, and i know that you will be ready to take these challenges head on now. we are here to support you! your surgery will be here before you know it!

steve, i am cheating, that is a pre-radiation picture. lol. you, i am in awe of. i cannot believe you were mowing the lawn and going fishing! amazing! i was knocked on my keister with rads and i did not even do chemo. thanks for prayers....right back at ya. :)

my doctors appointments went well today. my mickey button was changed. then the gastro doc and i had a chat about another dilitation. she recommended that we hold off until or if i become unable to swallow anything again. too risky. she was there for one of mine and things got a little hairy. i am hard to intubate and have to be put on a ventalator. she, and i feel it is more risky than a benefit at this point. i can swallow some foods, need to be careful, and chew, chew chew, and drink. they are happy with weight gain and the pump overnight is really helping.

I know where your coming from, they tacked my radiation treatments on the end I missed and i also kept track...the doctor was dissapointed when i was right on target with my quitting date. I'm still burning my mask, ugly as it is, they did drop one chemo off my 4, but i went in between weeks and got pain beds and was hdyrated from losing what ever i took in for the day..I drove the porcelin bus alot for 2 weeks, new question..help me out guys, my throat is still sore and raw, maybe 5 or 6 weeks out from radiation, they gave me hydrocodones so i could eat, while i 'm still down 43lbs, someone has pointed out to me that i have a smell, a medal smell, my boss mentioned it and i smell it once in a while when i have the phlem still, Is it drugs, the radiation still working, or the chemo, it smells like metal utensils...i thought is was the drugs with my stomach acid coming up...As always hang in there...I wish the chat system was up. I would really like to chat you with you people. Dennis

    What's that smell?
Hi Dennis and all, I'm two days away from finishing last rad, chemos are done. I'm holding my breath so something doesn't slam me at the finish. I also hold it because it, like me, isn't always as pleasant as it used to be. My mind is fuzzy as my head and I build up a smell that is a combination of adhesive tape residue, IsoSource spills, and bacteria resistant soap. When I take off my t-shirts and sweat shirts, I kind of hurry the process along as I pull the material overhead. I live alone, in an apartment complex, and when the thick smells of my neighbors' evening meals roll in I head for my bedroom and turn on the fan. The direct symptoms of treatment come and go, and sometimes evolve. Like you Dennis, I've driven the porcelain bus a few miles and am always happy when it is not a case of the Neverending Mucous show.

5 to 6 weeks is a long time, post rads, to suffer a lot from throat Dennis and I hope that problem begins to resolve itself for you soon. The meallic taste is apparently fairly common according to my RAD oncologist. Like I say, for me, it's just smells, sounds--which are all loud now--and light sensitivity, that add to the direct unpleasant symptoms of treatment. But you're longer out than I am Dennis and I'm hoping your turnaround time is near.

    Hey, Hal
Your comment about the smells of hour neighbors' meals really strikes home with me. I've always had a very good sense of smell, but as my treatment ended and for several months thereafter, my sense of smell got outrageously good. I mean, I was able to smell stuff that you don't even want to be able to smell.
I remember one evening when my wife was cooking herself some shrimp for dinner, it almost blew me out of the house (and we have a pretty big house). I wound up going room to room, spraying a room deodorizer in an effort to drive out the shrimp smell. My wife was not amused.
As for your mind being fuzzy, well, 17 months out I still have a bit of the old chemo fog ... or maybe it's just old age.
    Best of luck to you.

    Detox
    Hi Dennis & Hal,

I got some L Glutamine(powder) as recommended by my Naturopath as it's an essential Amino Acid and aids in healing the Mucosa (Includes your mouth and throat)and helps to rebuild lost body tissue (Google it). It also stopped the burning in my mouth.

I also tried to detox at every chance through diet (fresh vege juices as often as possible - search for Detox diet). Remember your body was fried and filled with toxic chemicals. My view is to clean that crap out of your body as best you can. I even had colonics done (including caffeine enemas) and know for a fact the one I had between surgery and Rads worked a miracle within hours. I was doped heavily on pethadine, morphine, paracetamol and the anaesthetic drugs for about 10 days and was in 'very' bad shape when I was released from hospital. My brothers helped me into the colonics clinic. 45 minutes later I walked out a new man and within 2-3 hours I was jumping around like Cassius Clay ! I kid you not. Just my story and my experience. Hope it can help you guys.

The smell and taste issues are not yet fully recovered but I am feeling pretty damn good these days. Finished rads Oct 10/2009.

    Morning Sweetblood
Have a Question, I saw you had an additional web site, and how bad was your cancer, I've picked up bits and pieces and sounds like your traveling a rougher road than I am. I wish these people thought of cancer a walk in the park, need to come here and read stories from people like us, we are very strong survivors, and have to go threw many hoops to make it. There are days I want to give up, no drama just the facts. your spouse offers you very little support, and your boss complains about a metal smell radiating off your body. I have a doctors appointment to day to check this out, and see how i'm progressing. Without this site, i wouldn't known where to see or believe in the cancer world. I hope the best for us all! So tired living with cancer. Best To All Dennis....

    I'll Check Friday Evening
I went to my appointment, you know it was great seeing my cancer family again, even the Doctors, where so kind, and listened to my every ache. They gave e a B-12 shot, and said i was 4 weeks out still,I will see more improvement. Throat was pretty torn up from my radiation and assured me this was not one of the easiest cancers i went threw for radiation, to tell my boss to cool it...LOL. Weight not great but they said I looked good, I even told all about my on line friends who have helped. Hope all is doing well, and hope all is well for everyone. Dennis, Talk Later Sweet Blood

Vitamin B Complex and C Shots
    HI Dennis,

Your post reminded me that I had 2 x 5 day courses of Shots of Vit B Complex and Vit C shots (i.e. straight 5 days then a couple of weeks off then another 5 days). It is hard to say what makes you feel better as I had nothing to compare it to but my Doctor said I looked better for it. Another of the many things I have done to try to aid recovery.

I hope you start feeling better soon Dennis. It can really drag you down when the recovery is slow. I went through very some dark patches when I thought I would never get better, but each phase passed and I did improve. Make sure you are getting nutrition, even when you have no appetite, try to get something inside you as it all helps you move forward.

I found also using positive affirmations would help. I started saying "My Mind is clear, my body is healthy' (over and over and over) whenever I thought about it or when I went for my initial walks and I used to sing the Beatles song "Getting so much better all the time....".

Try not to repeat negative thoughts or stuff when you're talking to people like "I always feel tired", "I'm not hungry.." etc even though these are valid re your condition, they just reaffirm in your subconscious the S#@T you are experiencing and it will do you no good. Talk and repeat your desired condition as if it's happing now or at least things to reinforce the positives like " I am feeling better..", "I am getting stronger..". You will get there Dennis. Hang in there.
