I was wondering if anyone has experienced any long term side effects from the Radio Active Iodine Treatment ( I131). I had a large dose 150mci and it made me extremely ill.
I have read nothing but nasty things about RAI but I have not heard anything about long term side effects from actual people that have experienced it. Any thoughts? Thanks

    A few side effects
The first time I only had no taste buds for a few weeks. The second time, everything tasted like metal for almost two months. I had a dry scratcy throat for a while and sometimes have a hard time swallowing.

I had 150 dosage also, both times. This really isn't considered a huge dose. There are doses much higher.

Thanks for the info. I am now going thru the stage where I have no taste buds! The first week seemed ok after the RAI; I only had that metal taste in my mouth, now I am actually not able to taste most things.
The physicist that administered my dosage advised me I was getting a pretty high dosage, he lead me to believe that he had only ever given about 200 and that was as high as you could give at one time. You never know why people say what they do anyway right.
Also I was wondering do you think that there is anything people could do to help them with the sickness that accompanies that nasty stuff? I was extremely ill after my pills. It lasted for about 8 days. The first 4 days were the worst with the vomiting and nausea. It was so bad I could not even have anyone cook anything in my house with out me getting nauseated and/or throwing up. It was awful. Does anyone have any thoughts on that?

There are prescription drugs that can help nausea. Ask your doctor if they can be prescribed for RAI. My understanding is that high doses (200-250 mCi)are usually for distant metastases, such as the lungs.
