Recently diagnosed, will start radiation chemo combo soon with 5-Fu and Cisplatin followed by surgery. I think stage is T-3. Phase I clinical trial of Zactima, Placlitaxel, Carboplatin, 5-Fu and XRT (radiation) followed by surgery was presented to me. I am in process of gathering info so I can make an informed decision. Does anyone have information to share?

    Clinical trial: Zactima
    Hi William66,

I am treating at Fox Chase Cancer Center. I am at beginning stages of testing, etc. and will begin chemo and radiation followed by surgery. Treatments should begin within 2 weeks. I will meet with surgeon for first time next week – I understand he does MIE’s. My immediate concern is to decide if I should choose the suggested 5-Fu and Cisplatin combo for chemo or participate in a Phase I trial using Zactima. I wanted to see if anyone had any information about this particular clinical trial. I am leaning against choosing the clinical trial, but wanted to see if anyone had any information to share so my choice will be as informed as possible.

Thanks for your suggestions. I beat rectal cancer just in time to deal with this crap. I am moving over from colorectal discussion group to this one. Your story helps me and others stay positive.

    Fox Chase Cancer Center
    Hi,

My husband just had surgery yesterday at Fox Chase Cancer Center! He was on the clinical trial for Zactima also along with the other drugs you mentioned and the daily radiation. The surgeon, Dr. Scott, said he was very pleased with the results of the treatments.
One thing I can tell you is to go to the support group meetings. They are great and the people are supportive and informative. They meet again in January.
If you want to talk, let me know! I will be at the hospital everyday. John is in ICU now and will then go to a regular room in a few days for about 2 weeks. You can reach me at tsleek@comcast.net.

    Zactima - Fox Chase
I read your other post -- 11 1/2 hours - Wow! I am so glad to hear your husband got through the surgery and is doing well. Perhaps I will have an opportunity to meet you and John soon at Fox Chase. I was looking forward to the Monday night support group but learned the meetings were cancelled for Nov. and Dec. and will not meet again until the end of Jan. I will meet with Dr. Scott next week. What was the main reason John chose the clinical trial? My best wishes for John's recovery from this rotten disease. It looks like he's well on his way.
