Has anybody heard about below asparagus therapy,I'v got it yesterday by e-mail from a friend:

Several years ago, I had a man seeking asparagus for a friend who had cancer. He gave me a photocopied copy of an article, entitled, `Asparagus for cancer ' printed in=20 Cancer News Journal, December 1979.
I will share it here, just as it was shared with me: 'I am a biochemist, and have specialized in the relation of diet to health for over 50 years.
Several years ago, I learned of the discovery of Richard R.Vensal, D.D.S. that asparagus might cure cancer. Since then, I have worked with him on his project. We have accumulated a number of favourable case histories.......

We all often get emails like this, it's funny how often they are bogus.
I think they are sent by well intentioned friends and family but it just shows how ANYTHING can be posted on the internet and very often it's thought to be true because "it was on the internet so it must be true!"
Hmmm...no mention of apricot seeds though.

December 1979, we've as yet been unable to locate a copy of that article or find information about either the e-mail's unnamed biochemist narrator or the article's purported authority, Richard R.Vensal, D.D.S. (It isn't clear what the "D.D.S." stands for - that abbreviation is typically the short form for Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Science, degrees one would not think would position their holders to perform groundbreaking work in the field of oncology.) It should go without saying that until far more is known about the 1979 "Asparagus for Cancer" article, that its purported miraculous tales of serious bouts of cancer overcome by asparagus therapy cannot be confirmed and thus should not be regarded as anything other than lore.

However, that article's provenance aside, asparagus might indeed have certain anti-cancer properties. In addition to this vegetable's many other nutritional benefits (only >25 calories per stalk, high in folic acid, plus a good source of vitamins A, B6 and C, calcium, iron, thiamin, potassium and fiber), it is high in the micronutrient glutathione, an antioxidant. Glutathione is said to defend the body against viruses, certain types of cancer, and boosts immune cells.

Antioxidants have long been touted as one of the keys to preventing cancer. However, the National Cancer Institute says of that conviction:

Considerable laboratory evidence from chemical, cell culture, and animal studies indicates that antioxidants may slow or possibly prevent the development of cancer. However, information from recent clinical trials is less clear. In recent years, large-scale, randomized clinical trials reached inconsistent conclusions.

This says it cures hangovers too

    No B.S.
That little jab about the apricot seeds made me laugh so hard I accidentally spit out my gum. Aside from that, aparagus is my favorite vegetable and I have eaten it very heavily my whole life. When I owned my restaurants I ate it at least once if not twice a day. I offered it on all my menus and kept it fresh. I like it anyway I can get it but my favorite is simply steamed with sea salt. I don't eat it as much now because I don't get it at wholesale prices and am not around it as much. I still eat it at least three times per week. I was diagnosed stage 4 in march of 2008. It may cure cancer, but it doesn't prevent it.

    Asparagus LOVER ♥
I also love asparagus and also got cancer. Sooo.... my Aunt Edith is giving Uncle Sully four tbs twice a day, plus Curry and a whole lot of other 'cure cancer' email thingys. She's only 14 years older than me (You know us southerners) and falls for every email that goes around.

I'm still laughing over the 'Breast Milk Cure' and Phil's lunch at Hooters! LOLOL

Laughter is good medicine! Now that's a FACT!

    Asparagus
I think you have to keep an open-mind. And remember one key point of this suggested cure. It says to PUREE the asparagus, that in itself will change the chemical make-up of the asparagus....just like cooking tomatoes changes the make-up of the nutrients in the tomato. It's worth looking into when chemo and radiation don't CURE anything, they kill the good cells and the bad cancer cells.

Use the book Whole Foods as Medicine to find out what each fruit and vegetable is good for. Avoid white sugar. Use Stevia or honey. Avoid eating things from boxes, canned food, preservatives, buy whole grain foods. Alkaline your body with foods, cancer doesn't grow in an alkaline environment.

Not all fruits and vegetables have to be organic, some don't absorb very much of the chemicals they are sprayed with, such as onions, ASPARAGUS, mangos. Exercise to increase your oxygen levels, cancer can't grow in an oxygen-rich environment.

Is that "Preparation A" instead of Preparation H?
Oh wait, that would be for anal cancer, not INSIDE....hummmmm.....Sorry, an enema with green purée would NOT be nice!

Oxygen via vascularization - sorry it is contrary
While I do agree with some of your points, please remember that cancer cells are CELLS, and do in fact, require oxygen rich blood to keep alive and growing, so I do not agree about the oxygenization of the body. I don't believe that it makes a difference to the cancer one way or the other.

It's an invasion and those CRC cells are going to take the oxygen they need however they can. The cancer is an alien and wants to survive as much as we do, and Buzz is so right when he says "fight, fight, fight!"

Epithelial Growth Factor (EGF) plays some role in vascularization (growth of new blood vessels) to support tumor growth, so it is not acurate that flooding the body with oxygen is good because then cancer can't grow. Nice idea, but not the reality. Otherwise we'd have oxygen treatments instead of chemo and radiation, and who wouldn't prefer that? :-)

I do agree, however, that exercise is indeed important, because your "normal" cells need oxygen to help support your immune system and any other body systems that are important to life and living. Exercise has also been indicated in improving one's mood, and so there is also a mental health plus aspect to exercise that is overlooked.

So when Pete wants to go walking, I'll be joinin' when I can! :-)

I also agree that we should try our best to eat healthy and minimize the chemical soup that is put into processed foods. I don't think the few Ring-dings that I ate as a child had anything to do with my diagnosis. People have been getting cancer long before Little Debbies were "invented" - when there was nothing but "wholesome" food. It's the (un-)luck of the draw; the short straw; the darn genetics - those unavoidable mutations in the genes within our chromosomes of our cells.

I am still waiting for spring, but looking forward to the beauty of it!

    disturbing
Brooks, Brooks, Brooks, just too disturbing to even think...wait, wait, wait...has anyone even tried it? I think perhaps I have been to hasty to judge such a thought on such a course jest. I can see it now - the "Brooks Cancer Treatment Center and Asparagus Farm." I can see book deals, news spots, maybe even a segment on Oprah!
