I am nervous about having a liver biopsy. Isn't it painful? What is the procedure like? Please be honest.

Hi!! Prayerangel!!! I had 2 liver biopsies. They gave me something to make me drowsy and no, I didn't feel no pain. They let me go home and the next day, I was back at work. I was very nervous too. But it wasn't bad at all. I'll keep you in my prayers. When is your biopsy?

I chickened out and cancelled the first appointment. Now I will call tomorrow to speak with the doctor. We're you given something through an IV to make you drowsy?

yes. I was given something thru an IV that made me drowsy. I was aware of what was going on, but didn't care. I didn't feel anything. Don't chicken out. Please have this done. It could be very important that you have it done soon. My prayers are still with you.. Let me know how you do..

Why are they doing a liver biopsy? Do you have a tumor? How old are you?

The 3 doctors want me to have the biopsy because I tested positive for DNA/Genetic testing for hemachromatosis (iron overload). I am a carrier, and they want to rule out actually having it. If I do, the liver will show, and I will have to be bled regularly, to remove the iron from my blood. I have an appt. with the doc who does it on this Wednes., 4/14. I will only do it if I can have more than the normal novacaine to the outside of the liver.

I hope that you have had your biopsy. My Dad recently had one and according to him, it did not hurt. The next day he could tell that he was stuck by a needle, but he said that the procedure itself wasn't bad. My prayers are with you.

Hi, Prayerangel - I had a liver biopsy
I am 39 years old. I had a liver biopsy because they detected a mass in my liver. It was not painful at all. They gave me something to put me to sleep, when I woke up it was over. They insert a small probe through the side of your body and take a small sample of your liver. You don't feel a thing. They will make you lay in place for a few hours after the biopsy to ensure no problems. But, overall it's not painful at all. Good luck and don't worry!

    Liver Biopsy

I've had a liver biopsy twice now, no pain. I had simple novacaine to numb the outside of the  skin for the tiny incision that is needed to insert the probe.  It is my understanding that the liver has no nerves, hence no pain. Get it done, you will need to lay on your side in the recovery room for an hour or so and then you get to go home. NOT a big deal to go through, honest.
