Good news on port adjustment today

Today they did a port adjustment in radiology. It took much more time than anticipated, but he was able to get the catheter out of the smaller vein and put it where it will draw blood. I was happy that procedure worked. As long as it took him, I kept waiting for him to say it would not work, but luckily it did work. Hopefully when I have blood drawn in a couple of weeks it will still work. I am hopeful to use it for all blood draws (which will be every two months) and CAT scans (which will be every 3 months.)

They only used lidocaine to numb the area. Did not get any other medication. They went in through my neck vein, on the opposite side of the port. It really was not too bad, just took a really long time.

My labs were good when I had them drawn, too, so things are looking very good. Thank you for the continued thoughts and prayers.

    Port
    Hi Ro10,
I'm glad that they fixed the port for you. I have been waiting to hear from your results but I'm relieved that it can be fixed. I have the port that went through my neck vein as well. I can see the tube up to my neck but it works well for blood draws and IV.

    Your Port
Ro....am sooo happy that you got your port working. I loved my port....had it put in the week before chemo started and they used it for all lab draws, chemo etc. My veins are poor so this was indeed a life saver!! Am sure you will love it now that it is actually working!!

    question re: port
Karen and Ro, do you have a "super port"? I have a regular one and was told I could not use it for blood draws or CT scans because it is not a super port. I get mine flushed every 6 weeks and they continue to rave about how great it is.

    Just wondering. Mary Ann

    Port
    Hi MaryAnn,

My port is called Power Port. The needle itself is 3/4 inches long that goes thru the port. There are different size for different port. I didn't know that there are other ports that you can't draw blood, etc.

Mary Ann I have a power port
The power port is supposed to be able to be used for CAT scans and blood draws as well as chemo. Mine also has a groshong catheter tip which means it does not need to be flushed with heparin but just saline. I will need to get mine flushed every 6 weeks also. I would think your regular port could be used for blood draws, as long as it does draw back blood.

    Smart Port
Mary Ann, I had a Smart Port. It is almost the same as the Power Point but by a different manufacturer. They used my port for chemo, lab draws and blood transfusions. I had it removed 3 months after I completed chemo.
