Hello all.
I don't know is this has been made into a subject, so here goes.
This was one thing I did not read about pre-surgery.

I am 1 day shy of 5 weeks post surgery. Went in last Thursday for my first PSA blood draw. I talked to the Doctor about it and he said it was just part of healing. I have read on the healingwell site just about the same answer.

I still have pain when I urinate. Not a great stream either. Drips at first then streams out then I need to push for awhile too finish. When I go it is like the head is still really irritated and swollen, which I can see some swelling at the tip, the head will point off to the left like a garden hose that gets pinched off, I still void though its not totally plugged. Sorry to be so detailed!

Also not all the times but sometimes I get the Perineal pain in my bottom area to where it hurts real bad, like getting hit with a hammer down there. There is no consistency as to when it will hurt or not.
I have taken Cystix, and Uricalm for pain relief while urinating. They hardly take the top off the pain.
I don't take anything else for the pain except the Azo type analgesic, which I stopped after 2 days.
I was just wondering what most of the rest of you all have experienced.
Thanks guys.
Keven

    Pain
I had 3 months of perineal pain when I sat down. Pain at the tip of the penis for two months. I was told it was normal. My doctor predicted this to a tee.

    Hi Lion1
Did the pain happen when you went pee also? That is what I don't understand?
    Thanks,

    Pain
Yes, right at the tip. It was extremely annoying and I wondered when it would go away. Then as I approached the end of the two months, it seemed like it just disappeared.

That's what amazes me. When your in pain it like a heavy weight on your back, then once the pain goes away it's like it was never there and you feel soo good.

I'll share one of my recent experiences with you, about when something is present and then it leaves and comes back. Please bear with me and I think you'll understand. I have been incontinent for over 3 yrs and continue to search for my cure.

When I was at Walter Reed in Jun for another URO AND cystscopy for the next 4 or 5 hours after the procedure I FELT LIKE I HAD TO PEE AN I WAS EXTREMELY SORE AT THE TIP OF MY PENIS. It was terrible, but strangely after that on my way to the airport and flying home, I was dry!!!! Yes I was dry!!! I thought to myself, what if by the grace of God I just stopped leaking for good. I mean for the 4 or 5 hours after that I didn't leak.

But later that day it's like my body said --okay--back to leaking--and it came back to leaking all over again.

But, I have to tell you for that short period of time after the pain of the procedures earlier---I was dry and it seemed wonderful.

I am sure you could understand where I am coming from----I just wish that brief miracle had continued---that's why I posted about the Advance Sling this week----that's what's probably next for me.

I hope your pain subsides soon.

Thanks for listening---all our experiences are different.

    Hello Lion1
    Lion1.
I am sorry your dryness only lasted 4-5 hours. Thanks for sharing your story. There are so many sad and happy stories on this board.
I am ready for the pain to just be gone.
I feel very lucky for all I have had in recovery so far though.
Like you said "all our experiences are different."
Be blessed. I will pray for you.
    Thanks,

    Pain
I did have some pain in the tip but I wrote it off the the catheter rubbing the end, I used vasilene to keep it from rubbing and it went away after a week or so of removal. Never had bladder spasms nor any particular internal pain. I used the DaVinci maybe others didn't. jj

    perineal pain
Yeah, I had those phantom pains for a few months. They should clear up though.
As for your "hose" problem. I think that may be related to the fact that your urethra is anchored at the tip of your penis and...think of it like a pajama string...it ain't as long as it used to be, but the rest of the equipment is. So, there's a little tension there. Unfortunately, none of my medical contacts, nor support sites has a solution to offer. You'd think it would be quick and easy to insert a few inches of "pig urethra" to solve the problem, but the experts' training stops as soon as the hospital door hits you in the fanny on the way out. My "kink" doesn't present until I achieve an assisted erection (drugs), and then it goes down; blast, why couldn't it go UP! Keep your eye on the goal.

    Leakage
Have you been doing your Kegel exercises? I remember being surprised that I'd been running around the house all day with no "protection", and it was fine. You may be coming to the corner, my man. Do those exercises; empty that bladder on a schedule; it will happen. There will be lapses, mine are usually at day's end when I'm really tired, straining on some work project (usually predictable now, and short lived.)

    Thanks,
Thanks for your input beenthere01, never really though about the shortening of the tube.
I guess they at least took a walnut sized piece out.

    Hang in there
Hang in there Keven. You are still in the recovery stage. Hopefully you will wake up one day soon and this will all be behind you. Has the Dr. suggested a topical antibiotic for the opening of the urethera. I was instructed to keep polysporin ointment applied to the tip while I had the catheter in. This kept the opening from getting infected and lubricated so that it wouldn't get irritated. It seems like it will never go away when we are going through something like this but once we are through it, it seems just to have been a bad dream. This too shall pass. Will keep you in my prayers. Take care.

    Hi Watch Repair man
I had radical prostratectomy March 2, 2009 and your doctor is telling you the truth. Pain was part of the healing process for me too. I too had the rectal perineal area and pain when I urinated, really hurt. My pain urinating was partly a bladder infection. Once that was treated with antibiotics, was still having some pain. My doctor prescribed Utira-C (generic is Utrona-C, less expensive and still effective). I used Vaseline on my penis when it was hurting so badly and it did help.

I also am having the weak stream and drips. I am taking Vesicare and it is helping with the incontinence. It is great to have the sensation that you have to pee and not every hour. Now if the drips and leaks stop it will be good. This too will take time, but when I remember where I was 2 months ago and now have some control I realize that I just have to be patient.

Good luck Watch man, it will get better and less painful.

    Update on pain when urinating.
Thank you JR for your post.
My pain when urinating is the same till Saturday night. Starting late Sat night (Aug 1) my flow went down to dribbles, and frequency increased, had to go about every 10 minutes. I had been seeing a lot of pieces of blood and tissue in my urine Thurs and Fri, once my flow just stopped, then I pushed and a large piece came out and I continued going... I was going a little better and could finish within a few minutes too. Used to take about 5 minutes or more to go pee, still sitting since I don't know which way the stream will go when it does start.
I was getting excited thinking maybe all the irritation and it's effects were getting better, and clearing out.
Man it's a few steps forward then 1 back.
I called the Doctor Monday morning and got in at 3:30pm. They had me empty my bladder and then did an ultrasound to see if I emptied all the way, it showed I had. The nurse gave me a sad strange look and told me the Doctor might need to take a look. I was kind of prepared for the scope check all day, waiting for the appt. From reading the posts here it seemed like they would need to look inside.
Wow that hurt, the male nurse came in first and covered my genital area with iodine and betadine. then he told me it would sting when he put in the numbing agent in my urethra tube. He couldn't get it in all the way because the blockage was about 1/2 inch from the tip of the penis, he did try, ouch. The stuff did burn, worse than I thought it would.
OK now it's the doctors turn, he took a look with the scope first and found the blockage about 1/2 inch from the tip. Now he brought out the dialation tools. He inserted about 5 different tools moving up in size with each one. Did some twisting and turning with each, clearing out the scar tissue which blocked my urine flow, and opening the tube a little more. The pain was mostly when he would put in a larger one, wow it did hurt. He looked all the way to the bladder after done reaming the tube and said it all looked great, That was a relief.
When he was done he filled my bladder with saline solution, using the scope tool that was still in, told me to hold my water when he pulled the scope out, right like I had any control after the invasion, it was very uncomfortable with the water in, felt like I had to go pee real bad.
I did hold it, or so I thought. Then he said to go pee, it didn't start, after pushing I did start to pee. I have not had a stream that good since before the operation. The Doctor told me they usually re-catheter now but because that is what started the irritation and scar tissue in the first place he was not going to do it. He sent me home with a tube of lubricant and a tool for self dilation. I have to insert a tapered plastic tool 1-1.5 inches into my urethra tube 2 times a day for 2 weeks then 1 time a day for 2 weeks, then 1 every other day and taper off like that till done. It will keep the urethea tube from developing scar tissue again.
It no longer hurts that bad when I urinate, that is a relief. Hopefully my problems with urination are almost finished.
It was a painful procedure but well worth it. I haven't done the self dilation yet but will later this morning.

Long story but here is something to stress to your medical team when going in for the operation.
I am a little latex sensitive and it was on my chart, which the staff did very well with (bandages etc.). The catheter was latex which is maybe why I have had so much irritation and pain in the urination part of recovery.
Let them know to only use non-latex tubing, I guess they have it in all the hospitals.
They missed it on me but that's fine. On my way to recovery and back to work soon.

I have been doing the self dilation's for a few days now. It is not as bad as I thought, sure beats having a catheter in again. My flow is back to better than before the operation.
It is nice to void in 30 seconds or less again. It used to take about 5 minutes with a lot of pain and pressure.
I feel I am almost ready to go back to work now. Before I could not because I don't believe I could make it to a bathroom in time for the urgency sometimes.
    Life is good.
    Thank God.
