Hey Everybody,

I started shopping around for human hair wigs..... wow!.... I had no idea they cost so much. The one I wanted was a little over $600.00.... Where do you all shop for hair? Any online sights?? Thank you

When I was first diagnosed I had just given birth to our 3rd baby. I started to lose my hair but I think it was as a result of the end of pregnancy (which happened the previous 2 pregnancies). About 3 months after starting chemo I had my liver resection/colon resection and after that surgery the hair really started to fall out. I would run my fingers through it and I would have lots in my hands. I started to research wigs as I didn't think I could make it through the summer without buying one. I did go get my hair cut shorter (shoulder length) and incredibly my hair started falling out 2 days later. I think my hair was falling out due to the anesthesia and that the timing for for the haircut and the anesthesia wearing off was coincidental.

A friend of ours (who had the exact diagnosis 2 months after my own) had greater hair thinning but before she lost it all she went to a wig-maker who matched her hair exactly. I think she paid over $1000 for the wig but you cannot tell the difference between what she looked like with her own hair and her new wig. It's phenomenal.

I don't have online sites to share with you as I had decided that I would only buy a wig through a wig store/consultant so I could try it on and get professional advice.

    Jennie,

Just a suggestion, but there are awesome synthetic wigs out there that cost a fraction of the price. Mine (that I ended up not needing) was $250 and I ordered it from a local salon before I cut my hair really short, so it would look like my typical hair. It looked awesome, and couldn't really tell the difference between real hair and the wig. Some cancer centers have access to wigs as well, so that may be worth checking into. The only thing I'd be cautious of when ordering online would be not matching your typical hair and maybe not looking quite right on you. The salon I went to matched my color and style and helped me pick out what to order....definitely worth the money.

I just ordered mine through the Cancer Society. It was not real hair but it looked great. After I got it I just took it in to my hair dresser who touched it up, thinning it a bit in a few places, and styling it for me. It was so easy to care for, washing and styling was a breeze. I only paid $50 or $60 for it.

I have ordered several synthetic wigs from PaulaYoung.com They look very real and most of mine were 30-50 range. I have had these for years and used to wear them all the time. They are easy to care for and maintain. You could check out there website for more information.

Synthetic wigs don't feel like real hair and you can't use a curling iron on them but you don't need to, just shake them and the curl and/or set is already there. After putting on just comb through and it looks real. No one that didn't know me would know I had one on. Actually my boss once told me he liked my new hair cut and I saw him everyday. They aren't plastic looking either. Good Luck! Check out PaulaYoung.com. You'd be surprised at how real they look.

    Hi Jennie

The one I got is human hair (European, I was told) and it's really gorgeous! It looks really close to my own hair, except for the stylist added wispy bangs to hide the wig's hairline. The owner Andrew donates some of the wigs to the kids at the Amer. Cancer Org. so I felt great buying from him. He had these really touchy letters from the cutest kids. Anyhow, the wig cost 1800 dollars! My four and a half year old said she still missed my old hair, everyone else thought it was just a gorgeous wig. Oh, he also offers to was and style the wig for a whole year for free. He is big on the whole Karma theory and volunteers at the cancer org. and loves helping women out with wigs. Don't buy something you are not going to wear. Andrew is very kind, maybe if you let him know what you can affort he can work something out.
You can mention my name. Our baby sitter will be seeing him for a cut as a b'day present from us.

Let me know what you end up getting.

    Hair is thinning.
My Onc said I would not lose my hair. I had my 2nd Folfox. Now when I wash my hair, I notice a lot of hair coming out. Is this the norm? Thanks.

    hair.....
Mine thinned some but didn't lose anything significant...It also made my head itch unmercifully but yeah I did lose some but not a lot. Not enough to shop for a wig if I had been a woman.....I did the folfox also...

Yup this is normal and mine did the same thing. It thinned but I never lost it, well on my head that is, I lost most of it where the sun doesn't shine. That was due to the radiation. The comedian Robert Schimmel talks about a wig for down there. He had me in stitches on that one.

Don't waste your money if you don't have to - my experience
I panic and bought two synthetic wigs, very nice, and never wore them they sit on my shelf rmeinding me of the $300 I paid for them. Sometime you can brush your hair different to hide thinning or color your hair lighter so your scalp doesn't show as much.

    Good Luck

    human hair wig
I had bought a synthetic wig last time while on Folfox, hair only thinned, hated wig and never wore it. Went to "Look Good, Feel Better" program from American Cancer Society, and it was awesome. So when i went on Folfiri this time with Erbitux, i went to AmericanCancer Society and they had human hair wigs made by Pantene. So i tried one on, loved it, took it to my hairdresser and she trimmed while i was wearing it. This time, i lost 80% of my hair, and had to do something. So i wear the wig, no one seems to notice(except me), have had lots of great comments, like"i can't believe your hair grew back so fast", and that was from my primary care doctor. So even tho i said i would never wear a wig, never say never. I am very happy with my free wig and even donated my never worn wig to them. I am very thankful. Mary

    I don't know....
...I always found wearing someone elses human hair on my head kinda creepy, so I been looking at the fake ones, and they look just as good, I'd even wear a hat over it, and I heard the American Cancer Society sometimes just gives them away to you, I get a catalogue of their wigs, hate and scarves right here off this site, and you'll get it pretty quick, and they come in all colors with highlights even! I may get one from there in case my hair keeps going from them, and already picked one that may look really good on me.

    Hugsss!

    Just found a Great product!
My hair has been through a lot of thinning but I am not ready to wear a wig yet. I bought some TRESmanne 24 Hour Body spray and it actually gives body to cover the thinning. This is the first product I have tried which actually worked for me. Just wanted to share with you.
