Hello everyone ,since this is the greatest place to learn about cancer ,i will continue to ask my questions since it is the first time with the DX .
I hear it is good to start the flouride TX before the rad, i went to my DENTIST and he made a mouth tray and dispense a gel flouride so i can used nightly for 30 minutes before bed , i stared last mid week since my radiation will not start till maybe the next monday ,but today i call my rad doctor and he told me to stoped that i will not need that now ??, he is going to use a very new trilogy machine that will not affect my glands or bone so ,it is because of that that he make me stop ???Anyone did this treatment to prevent bone and decay problems? i know my rad will be minimal and only 4 minutes daily x 5 weeks.
Tell me.

    Flouride
I used my flouride treatments before during radiation treatments which I had everyday for 6 weeks (IMRT) and continue to use it to this day I would ask your dr why he told you stop, there may be a reason due to the type of radiation then confer with your dentise. God bless

    Roxie,

You mentioned elsewhere that someone told you that you may need to have a couple of molars removed, if I am not mistaken.

I would not dispute your doctor, to start with. If you do not trust him/her, get one that you CAN trust.

That said, and with no idea about the new technology you are going to go through, I will advise that I spent four long hours on four separate days getting my teeth cleaned. They wanted everything off of those teeth, and I can imagine why.

I lost a couple of molars too, along the way, and also was misdiagnosed with a cancer spot in my mouth that later turned out to be an infection (and thus the removal of one of those molars).

I would not do anything that is contrary to what the doc advises, but I would certainly look into getting those teeth thoroughly cleaned prior to going in for rads.

    Good luck!

    Take care,

    Joe

Hello Joe, and thank again for following my concernings.I already went to my Dentist last week and he did and hr and little more deep cleanning since my routine prophilaxis was in Dec 08 and due to my surgery i don't want to agravate the area before or after ,so finally i was able to do it last week, iam one more time lucky to have good teeth ,strong and just 2 fillings in my 47 yrs of age, i never have any work done other than cleanning .
My concerning that you mentioned about the molars is ,that a friends daughter who is just graduated from UF Dentist school saw my surgery area this past weekend ,and told me that, i should pull the last molar were the bone was exposed due to the soft palate piece remove ,and tha it was better now than later to avoid any bone rad necrosis .Well you know how it is when you leasen to a young grad plus , since this is the first time iam dx with cancer nomatter that is low grade ,it freek me out ,,i ask my dentist after i post my concern and he told me that he dont think i will need any extraction ,also i spoke with my rad PT today and he also told me to stop for now the flourida tx till he order ,i later find a webside were it said that that tx is ok to started in a week or so after rad begin.
The most important thing for me now is wait for all the new tissues to cover the excision and the bone by the back molar ,i will definatelly will not start till it is all cover to avoid complications and mayors sideefects.
    Thanks Joe .

    Do you have dry mouth?
I ask because if you do, you need to be really, really conscientious about taking care of your teeth. I use anti-dry mouth products religiously and see my dentist every 3 months. The danger of gum disease and cavities goes way up because you're not generating enough saliva to combat the bacteria that's in your mouth - especially while you sleep!

If things are pretty normal as saliva production, then I would still recommend more frequent visits to your dentist. It just helps my peace of mind.

BTW - Joe? How did you add your avatar? I cannot figure it out!

    Just ask your doctor why

Just ask your doctor why and ask as many questions as you want - he needs to tell you. They have some amazing new stuff these days! If it's not going to affect your salivary glands, then you don't need the flouride. Saliva prevents your teeth from decaying.

I had rads 10 years ago. I used the flouride trays beforehand and had all teeth fixed as well. During radiation they gave me this lead wax stuff to mold over my teeth to help prevent hot spots on my teeth. The rads killed my salivary glands which have restored about 80%.

They gave me mega radiation because I was relatively young and healthy. And brachy therapy. That combo gave me osteoradionecrosis of the jaw about a year after the rads.

My dentist would like me to continue the flouride but I can't because of the exposed bone in my mouth - flouride on exposed bone can lead to bone cancer.

    best wishes, k.
