Recovering from cervical cancer

I completed my treatments from cervical cancer on Oct.2008, but I was wondering if anyone out there is feeling this way. I feel bloated, I have some pain on my stomach(I had surgery to remove some lymph nodes they found cancer there too) have the urge to urinate a lot, sometimes at night I feel pain around my legs doctor said could be a side effect from radiation. Anyone out there feeling this way??? I wonder if I'm ever going to feel normal again. Help...

    Hi bunnie1...
    I had 1b2

    Hi bunnie1...
I had 1b2 cervical cancer with 2 lower lymph nodes involved. I was not a candidate for surgery...just had external radiation, internal radiation and chemo. My last treatment was on January 5th, and I am still having many side effects. I feel totally bloated, have leg pain almost nightly, severe abdominal pain at times, diarrhea on a weekly basis, and headaches at least once a week......What stage was your cancer? What was your treatment? I don't know if my treatment plan worked as I don't have a follow-up appointment until April!
    Keep in touch...stay strong:)

Hello tinkerbell66, I had stage 4 cervical cancer, very scary. Besides surgery I had chemo and external&internal radiation. My last treatment was in Oct.08 and in Nov. I had a biopsy, I returned in Dec. for follow-up. My treatments did work, doctor could not detect any cancer. Now its all the side effects I have to deal with. I too experienced a lot of pain on my legs (I got some pills for that)abdominal pain, bloating. I read side effects will continue to come for years. Did your doctor give you something for the headaches? diarrhea is common from treatments I was lucky I didn't have that problem. I'll pray for you. Always think positive and you will be okay. I too was very worried when I had to wait for the results from biopsy. I see my doctor in April too, he will do a pap so I'm concern a little. Thank you for your response. Take care

    Fatigue
    Hello bunnie1 and tinkerbell66,

Thanks for being here. I was diagnosed with stage 1b1 and was treated with a radical hysterectomy in August 2008. I had my first follow-up pap smear in December and the nurse told me the results read ASCUS (atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance). She didn't explain what that meant but told me just to come back in three months for the next pap smear.

I haven't had any leg pain but I have experienced some swelling in my left leg. Was the pain that you felt accompanied by swelling? And, my energy level has been very low. Do you all experience any fatigue?

I will keep the both of you in my prayers.

Hello, anxious1 I'm sorry to hear what your are going through, but stay positive and you will be okay.I would call my doctor and ask to explain the results, you should never leave the doctors office confused and scare. Its your health and body, and you deserve better. On the home page where it reads cancer.org below the first line "cancer information" click and on the top line "search" write atypical squamous and click, you can read what it is. Sometimes we patients have to do a little homework if our doctors don't do theirs. I still experience pain on my legs(just this morning), but my doctor told me it was a side effect from chemo this has been since last Aug. I don't have any swelling. You mention low energy, are you eating okay? I also experienced fatigue, again from chemo, I would sleep a lot. I would drink some ensure at times because the food did not taste good and I had to give up spicy, greasy, fried foods. Take care of yourself and rest as much as possible. Ask your doctor about the swelling, are you on your feet long hours? Please let me know how you are doing. TAKE CARE..

You are so sweet. I think I have been eating fine, probably too much as a result of worrying. I've made it a point to "slow down" now though. I have my next pap in a couple of weeks and will be sure to speak to the doctor before I leave (a gyn resident did my last pap smear). The leg swelling has mysteriously gone down. I'm going to make sure to keep a close watch on it though.

How are you? Have you been able to eat?

    Talk with you soon!

Hello there, I'm doing much better. A few weeks after completing my treatments I felt stronger and eating was not a problem. I seen my doctors yesterday(chemo&radiation) and everything is looking good. What a relief!!! I'm gaining weight too. Sometimes when we start to worry a little too much about things we don't know, we bring on pains and aches to our bodies. So take it easy and relax. I hope your next pap is negative, I would hate to see anyone go through treatments like I did. It was a horrible experience and I pray I don't go through it again. Stay positive and take care..
