What's so special about ginger? If you're into cholesterol-friendly cooking, try adding ginger. This herb adds a combination of spice and/or citrus-like flavor to meats, breads and vegetables without increasing the fat, cholesterol or sodium content of the food. In addition, preliminary tests suggest that ginger may help protect against high cholesterol.

Plus, my own two cents-worth, ginger is widely recognized as having a calming effect on nausea. Oh, and for the purists, I'm pretty sure ginger is considered a root not an herb as described above!

Have a happy, healthy day!

Hey sponge, Ginger is indeed a root! Not only does it soothe an upset stomach, but it can prevent motion sickness, relieve migrane headaches, soothe arthritis pain, and can reduce clotting in the blood. Although you can buy it in powder form, fresh is best and the more potent variety comes from Africa or India than the more common Jamaican kind. You can't tell the difference by looking at them, so you'd need to ask to produce guy. For those who might want a recipe with Ginger Chicken and snow peas just ask and I'll post it or send it to you email.

    ginger rocks!

I put it in my carrot juice daily, grate it in my tempeh and tofu stirfry and sprinkle it on chicken.

Ginger is EXCELLENT for any kind of digestive issue so those of us with intestinal cancers really should be giving ginger a place of honor in our diets.

I love ginger!!! My grandma in Quebradillas, Puerto Rico introduced me to ginger tea made from ginger root and milk in the 60s!!! It was such a treat to have her put me to bed with a cup of milk with ginger root!!! She used to crush the root a bit and steam the milk with the root in it. Add a bit of cinammon and nitey nite!!! As a chemo patient, I've too re-discovered it. Thanks for your input!!! neelieC

    EPSOM SALTS AND GINGER:
This bath opens pores and eliminates toxins and also helps to eliminate pain.
Stir one cup of epsom salts and 2 tablespoons of ginger in a cup of water
first, then add to the bath. Do not remain in the tub for more than 30
    minutes.

sponges Nutrition Tip Of The Day got me thinking; this is another obvious omission on this site..or another set of topical sites other than by cancer type is needed. we should be able to read and post by the many related topics-eg; Drugs, Alternative Therapy, Trials, Nutrition, etc. and somehow be able to cross-reference from one page to another and back..kinda like the menu on the left, but more detailed.. I realize that this site is a volunteer powered operation, but then you do ask for input..

    Hey Sponger.

Thanks for starting us off. I think this is a great positive thing for the site.

But, I can't stomach the taste of ginger. Anyone have any recipes? I don't even like the smell of it.

    Barb -

Wanda offered up one for ginger chicken and snow peas (which, by the way, Xenia, I'd like a copy of!). I am not crazy about the pickled ginger they serve with sushi (that's why I usually give it all to Maura), but ginger snaps, ginger ale, ginger BEER!, ginger bread with hot lemon sauce...

Do any of those do anything for you? Of course, THOSE are probably loaded with lots of crap that un-does any of the good qualities of ginger... (except the ginger beer, of course!)

    Sure Sponge,

I lived on Ginger Ale while on chemo. And I like ginger snaps. But, they don't fare well with my trying to lose weight.

I'll try it in my stir fry next time I have it. But, I can't promise I'll like it.

Of course, we all know, that we can't do everything that is suggested for optimal health. We'd be eating tons of veggies, fruits , vitamins, herbs, lean chicken, water out the kazoo, garlic , cayanne, onions, calcium, mushrooms, tumeric ( sp?), ....

Incorporate that which works with our lifestyle.

    Here ya go:
    GINGER CHICKEN AND SNOW PEAS

1 Lb skinless, boneless chicken breast
    2 tsp. cornstarch
    1/3 C. defatted reduced-sodium chicken broth
2 tsp. reduced sodium soy sauce
    2 tsp. canola oil
    2 cloves garlic, minced
    1 tbsp. grated fresh GINGER
    1 C. snow peas

Cut the chicken crosswise into thin slices. Place the cornstarch in a small bowl. Add broth and stir to desolve the cornstarch. Stir in the soy sauce. Set aside.

In a wok or Lg. frying pan, warm the oil over high heat. Add the chicken and stir fry for 2-3 minutes, or until chicken is no longer pink. Add garlic & ginger. Stir fry for about 30 seconds, or until fragrant. Add snow peas and toss.

Add the broth mixture. Cook, stirring constantly, for 1-2 minutes, or until sauce thickens or becomes translucent.

Makes 4 servings.. Serve over rice

    Per serving:
    cal. 170
    total fat 5 g.
    saturated fat 0.9 g.
    cholesterol 63 mg.
    sodium 150 mg.

    Hi Wanda,
Thanks for the recipe....I planted snow peas..LOTS of snow peas, and the recipe sounds quick and easy. I also make a similar dish of just veggies: snow peas, Vidalia onions and sweet red peppers, with veggie broth, for all you vegetarians out there. Judy
