Anti-Emetics?!

Hello guys and gals!

I hope everyone is enjoying the more favorable temperatures and the week-end! I received my Avastin infusion and oxaliplatin this week. While I'm ecstatic to be on the new regime, I am sick as a dog. For the past 2 1/2 years, the nausea and vomiting has been minimal to nonexistant. Since Wednesday (after FOLFOX) I haven't been able to keep anything down. Well, I actually haven't really been eating but continue to gag and throw up bile (I apologize for the mental imagery... Forgive me!). Any suggestions?! I have been taking Zofran 8mg every 6 hours and stemetil in between but the n & v persist. What other meds. are out there? Thank you guys!

    Hey there Sweet Baby Girl (sounds like it could be a song).....

    While I was doing Folfox with Avastin, I took 10 mg of prochlorperazine (that's what is on the bottle). It worked most of the time.

    I also found that scraping a lemon and then smelling it really helped when I would have a nausea attack. Ginger is also very good (I learned that after I stopped chemo). There are pills for it, powdered ginger and of course fresh ginger root. You can add a few slices of fresh gingeroot to a cup of hot water and let it steep (sit) for 6-8 minutes and drink it like a tea also. The longer it steeps the stronger the flavor. You can add honey and fresh lemon to that too. Don't forget too throw out the slices (too potent to eat).

    If you have a juicer, you can juice a 1/4 inch of fresh gingeroot, 1/2 handful of fresh peppermint or spearmint, 1/2 small fennel and 2 apples cut into wedges and seeds removed.

    Hi there andrea, I also took prochlorperazine. It's a prescription, ask your Dr. It worked for me too. 1 pill every 6 hrs s needed. I'm not much of a soda drinker but Coke also settled my stomach, or ginger ale. Hope you don't have too many close encounters with the bathroom. Try to keep your energy up sweetie.     Hi Andrea,

    I am so sorry to hear of you uncomfortable state. Run to the doc and ask for EMEND; it is a new monoclonal-antibody from Merck - the only thing that is keeping me in my FOLFOX regimen. It is great....but expensive and I have been given samples packets. The docs have paired it with a steroid - Decadron- which is hard for me...so I cut my pills in half. Also the Lorazopan helps me queasiness.

    Before the EMEND, I was a mess - to the emergency room for the constant vomitting and lack of hydration.

    This is really somewhat of a "wonder drug" - at least for me. Do check it out!

    Hi andeae,
    I haven't had too much trouble with nausea, but one of the docs I work with recommended something called kytril (she recommended Zofran too, but I guess you've already gone that route). Anyway, I haven't tried it, but maybe it's an option for you. Good luck. I'm hoping for good results with whatever you try next.

    Hi Andrea, When I was doing the FOLFOX, I had nausea and vomiting too. They put me on Zofran, decadron and reglan, round the clock. Seemed to do the trick for me and I get sick really easy. Good luck, I hope you find the right combo for you. Nausea and vomiting are terrible

    Hi Andrea,

    I'm so sorry your sick. My first treatment of Folfox was administered without Emend and I ended up in the ER with a six day hospital stay. Emend is given one hour prior to Folfox and on day 2 and 3. It is over $100 a pill but my insurance covered it. It is a wonder pill, but some doctors fail to prescribe it. It is not good at stopping nausea once it starts, but keeps it under control if given prior to the oxaliplatin.

    Hope the next treatment is not so rough.

    I'm sorry to hear that you have so uncomfortable reactions. I haven't had my chemor so I have no insight of it.

    Hey Andrea: I dunno which Folfox protocol you are on, but mine was 6-I think..5fu, Leuv., Oxal., infused, then 48 hrs continous at home w/pump..they also hooked up a 2-liter saline bag with the pump, which helped the nausea quite a bit. The Emend only seemed to help the late-(after coming off pump) nausea, but after much experimentation, Avitan (tiny white pill) seemed to help right after infusion and during. Nanuk
