Hi, I was at church yesterday and felt what I thought was urine running down my leg because of having the cathether removed and not being able to regulate it real good yet. I went to the restroom and was bleeding out of the rectum real bad. My bottom still hasn't healed from the surgery May 20th. They can't start chemo again until it does. I called my surgeon today and asked if he wanted me to wait until my appt on Wednesday to come in and he said no, to come in today. He said I am bleeding really bad and he could see where it was coming from, so he cautherized me. I think that's the right name for it. He said he kinda burned it and it should form scar tissue and heal. He said if I continue to bleed to call him back and he'll have to admit me to the hospital. Oh no, not again, I said. It's doing better. He wants to see me at my regular appt on Wednesday and he said he may need to cauterize me again. Does anyone know anything about this??? Am I saying the right term??? I hope this takes care of it. It should have healed a long time ago, but he said radiation has caused it not to. Any info would be appreciated.
Love and prayers, Judy(grandma047)

    Judy -

You are probably thinking of "cauterize". It is a process whereby they burn the open ends of blood vessels closed. You probably are bleeing from very small blood vessels so they cauterized the wound to close them off so they will stop bleeding.

    Glad you're doing better!

Cauterizing is a rather common practice, a small probe puts an electric charge to the point of bleding, and burns the tissue and causes the bleeding vessels to seal up. Cauterization is usually used for slight bleeding, nothing major, so your bleeding was probably minor although it probably looked a lot worse. Hope this helps,...Carl

Radiation did a number on my bottom and I had a plastic surgeon on the team for a year doing wound mangement. She used silver nitrate to cauterize weeping and bleeding. I wore diapers because of the leakage. It was nice to don a pair of white cotton panties after that.
Glad you lost the catheter. Of all the tubes sticking out of me over the years I hated that foley with a vengeance.
It will probably take a long time to heal but it will happen. Just hang in there.
