Hello All,

I have been moved by many of your post. I am sorry to post on here when I haven't beem diagnosed but I am totally panic stricken.

I am a 36 year old male. Over the past three weeks I have been experienceing increasing pain with swallowing and bad pain in chest ( right side). I had an upper GI (barium xray) two weeks ago and came back with a moderately large hiatal hernia and showing gerd. I am on prevacid, but am not confident in the diagnosis. Have any of you had upper gi's that showed normal and still had cancer.

Thanks and god bless you for your responses.

So did your Upper GI reveal anything? Was it any good. Reason I ask is a recently just had one. Everything normal. But I still feel miserable. I read somewhere that they are not too reliable and so I'm so scared. I'm do for an endoscopy soon, but I was hoping since my Upper GI was normal maybe that could give me some peace of mind.

Believe me, I do imagine. I am going to be 36 yrs. in a couple of weeks and I am also completely panic stricken. I have not been diagnosed w/cancer, but my mother has had a lymphnoid removed in her neck, throat cancer and breast in the last 14 yrs. So I am terrified. I woke up in Jan.2004 not feeling right and I haven't been the same since. I thought I just slept on my neck wrong, but that wasn't the case. My doctor did nothing to help the situation either. He said, you look fine. Blood work came back normal, whatever blood work he had ran. I don't know. After me continuously complaining he had me have a chest x-ray done which also came back normal. I evenually changed doctors and a ct scan was done on my neck and chest and that came back with pnuemonia. I was put on antibiotics for 2 weeks and rescanned. Nothing changed. I am also a smoker too which doesn't help my state of mind. She that sent me to a pulmonary specialist who wanted to do a bronchoscopy. I couldn't ever imagine going thru that. I am one that can barely tolerate a needle. I had it done yesterday and I was so drugged up on demoral I didn't remember a thing, now I have to go Tues. for the results and I am so scared. I am not ready to go thru some awful disease. And I do have a problem of thinking the worst. I have watched what cancer can do to someone and I am praying daily for me not to have to go thru that. I am not at all real religious, but that's all I find myself doing now, please god? I feel for everyone what has to go thru such an awful disease. No one deserves it. I just wanted to let you know you are not alone. I also don't know what to do with myself.

With out going into too much detail, a relative was diagnosed this friday. She is a smoker. She also has suffered from (GERD) acid reflux. She figured it was heartburn. Now it seems, she may have waited too long to consult a doctor. So no matter what, one doctor's opinion is not enough. GERD can lead to esophageal cancer, if left unchecked. If you don't have cancer, know that you have taken a good step in preventing it's occurance. Exhaust all availible resources, get a third opinion if necessary. I recommend listening to your body. Often instinctual knowledge is more in tune than any doctor or test. Good luck.

Hi, my name is Paul, 39, from Hockessin, Delaware. I was diagnosed with stomach cancer in June of 2003 after having tests for acid reflux and heart burn for just a week straight of the symptoms. The doctors here said it was possibly just a constriction of the esophagus. But they did an EGD scope and they saw a tumor half the size of a golf ball. 8 weeks later they went to operate and the tumor had consumed half my stomach. They could not do the surgery. My wife and I went to the University of Texas' M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (#1 in the usa and the world) and they did just chemo, carboplatin, taxol and 5-FU for 6 straight months and they dissolved the tumor without surgery.
They are located in Houston, Texas and www.mdanderson.org for more info.
