Prayers for my dad.

My dad's physicians have recently told him that he probably has "months" not years to live. Evidently his cancer is spreading along his spine and is also in his sacral region. They have taken him off Casodex and put him on Zometa since there can be a delaying effect for some when this is done. His PSA has increased consistantly from about 2.4 last November to 9.2 at his most recent test. Thankfully his is not in pain. My understanding that it is not until around psa's of 40 or more that pain/symptoms occur. His only recourse if the lastest approach doesn't work will be chemo. At that's a very personal choice since he's 73 and the effects may not be worth it since chemo is not very effective. I would appreciate your prayers for him.

Our prayers are with you. I know how you feel cause my husband is in the same situation. but it's his primary dr. who has told us. not the dr. at mskcc. they just keep going on about don't worry and well try this and that. but my husband is in alot of pain. and very enemic. but just think of all the good times you have had and spend as much time as possible. know that he had 73 good years and a great son who worrys and cares. keep him in your heart and mind. also they say that it helps the family and person who is terminal if they have a part in there final arrangments. if there is something they might want or not and to help so they feel they were in control till the end. now is a good time to think about it when you are a little more clear. i hope he has great quality time left. hold strong.

    Kaiepooh,
Thanks for the kind words. It does seem as though we are in similar situations. My dad was only told that he likely only had months to live by a new doctor he got. The previous one just avoided prognostic statements and would just say indeterminate things like "return when you have pain or when your PSA reaches 40". I am sure I am already grieving but do my best to remain real with my dad and still hopeful. I am sorry to hear your husband is in such pain. Where have they located his cancer? What is his PSA at this point? My prayers to you both!

    Sincerely,
    David

My husband has prostate that has spread to his bones. his whole spine, shoulders, hip thats all i know of right now. his psa at last check was 8.? the pain meds just take the edge off. we are going to the dr. on wed. she too just keeps avoiding the questions and prog. our family dr. who i think is great is the one who has told me that it is worst than the other dr. says. he has had lots of patients who have gone throught this. Just hang in there and know that when all is said and done he will be whole again and in no pain and not sick anymore. our bodys are just a house for our souls. we move until we are truley home. What makes this so hard for me is he is so young 58yrs old. and we have a 4 yr old. But i keep my spirits strong for them and tell myself this too shall pass. one day at a time. You are still in my prays and if you need to talk i am here.

    Hi Kaiepooh,

Well, my dad is very similar. His last psa was 9.2 and he has identifiable cancer in about 6 of his thoracic vertebrae plus a new lesion in his sacral region. Fortunately he does not have much pain at this time. I am so sorry to learn you have a 4 year old that will be affected by this. I am a single, full time dad of a 3 year old daughter. I, myself am a 3 year survivor of kidney cancer. My greatest fear is leaving her should my cancer return. I agree with you that our bodies are just temporary shelter for our souls, but having to leave behind a precious child is just so hard, on the dying and on the surviving. I am going to pray the blood of Jesus Christ over your family. May God's Grace intervene to prevent yours and mine from having to suffer much pain.

    Bless you,
    David

    David,

Just wanted to know how your dad was doing. I pray for peace and comfort for him and your family. My Husband statred chemo a month ago and is doing quiet well.(fingers crossed). Very little side effects and his pain and psa are coming down. Did they discuss chemo for your dad. If so it may help. Just a thought. You are still in my prayers and be well. please keep us updated.
