Squamous Cell Ca Vocal Cord

My 66 years old mother had a hoareness voice for more the 2 months. She was told that she had a lesion Left vocal cord. After undergoing a direct laryngoscopy and biopsy of vocal cords the result was that she had traces of sq. cell ca. cancer on the Right vocal cord (strange enough). On the other hand she has been suffering from pain in the ear, neck and upper shoulder on the left hand side (and not on the right). She was then refered to the radiographer and he said that the is nothing to worry because the rays will effect both sides. In an article I've read about Radiography it says that the important thing about it is that the exact area for treatment should be indentified in order to concentrate the rays. Did anyone else encounter something similar?? Thanks

The radiation will go all the way through to the other side, that is correct. I had a mask made for my face that held my head in a fixed position throughout the treatment. It fit very tightly but I got used to it. I too had squamous cell on the right vocal chord. I had two surgeries and 7.5 weeks of radiation treatment. This was back in '92 and I have been cancer free since then. Any other questions don't hesitate to ask, I will check back.

My father passed away from cancer of the throat last May. I would like to know more symptoms that people had so I can understand his suffering and what he went through. I was only able to be with him twice during this ordeal and regret not more. My brother was there living in the same State and was able to take my dad to the doctors and appointments. Unfortunately he also had to put him in a rehab center (fancy way of saying nursing home). Please write and do tell so I could understand this disease better.

Hi, I had vocal chord cancer last year. I received 8 weeks of radiation and am now cancer free thank God. My radiation ended last August, and now for the past three months I have severe swelling of the vocal chords and neck pain. I just had a cat scan last week and it shows the swelling but dr. can't figure out what is causing it. Because of the swelling I have lost my voice again. Has anybody else experienced this? Appreciate your help.

YES!! Ijust posted a similar message although I had a cold and bronchitis since the cat scan and my voice is almost gone as well. I am 2 years out since treatment started. The cat scan showed swelling as well. What is up with that! I go for another scope in 2 weeks but have been very concerned and depressed today thinking about it! Judy
