STEROTACTIC BREAST BIOPSIES

I AM GETTING A STEROTACTIC BREAST BIOPSY DONE THIS WEEK. WAS EXPECTING A REGULAR
BIOPSY DONE BY A SURGEON. BUT NOW TO SAVE
MONEY THEY SAY THEY HAVE THIS MACHINE RUN BY A TECHNICIAN TO TAKE A SAMPLE TISSUE BIOPSY. THIS DOES NOT SEEM LIKE IT WOULD BE THE BEST WAY TO TEST FOR CANCER ?? DOES ANYONE HAVE GOOD OR BAD EXPERIENCES WITH THIS TYPE OF BIOPSY ???? PLEASE???

    Hi,

    This is the latest procedure and highly though of by the medical community. It's not a question of cheaper but less invasive.

    I had a mammogram in Dec 2000 which showed cancer and at the same facility the same day, the radiologist M.D. ( it won't be a technician, I don't think) did the stereotactic biopsy which was then sent to a lab for determination of grade etc. of the cancer.

    It is also used to decide if there is a cancer. Usually two or three samples are taken - the advantage of this to fine needle biopsy is that bigger intact pieces can be obtained. I was pretty bruised but not in much pain afterwards.

    Feel free to ask anything else. I suppose there are also variations depending where you live. I live in New York state.

    I too had this done first, and it is an easier way of checking without having to have it done surgically. It is done on an outpatient basis and only takes an hour or so altogether. It is not the most wonderful thing I've gone through but certainly not the worst. I had a wonderful Dr. and technichian so it was easier. They can get tissue samples from what they draw out and then you can get the same info you would've gotten from a surgical biopsy. Good luck, and let me know how it goes.

    I just want to say if you read some of our stories you too would see that many things are not done in the name of money. I think one should take comfort in knowing they are checking it out to make sure. It sometimes is the littlest of things one should be grateful for.

    I had one done. It wasn't that bad. You lay on your stomach, with your breast through a hole. they numb you, and take out tissue samples. You have to lay still about 40 min. Of course there is a little discomfort, but not too bad.

    Someone, please help! I'm having stereotactic biopsies on both breasts tomorrow (2/14) and I'm terrified of the pain aspect of it. I've read everything I can get my hands on. Although I'm getting a local to supposedly numb the areas, I just can't believe there won't be significant pain. So, please level with me.

    This is my first time on this site. I am having a stereotactic biopsy next Wed(4/30/03), and like you, I am terrified of the pain. My surgeon has told me that the radiologist will just numb up the skin where he makes a .5cm. cut through which to insert the needles for 6 to 12 samples. I have two areas with microcalcifications. Although I read some of the responses to your original message, I would appreciate your opinion of the procedure and the discomfort involved. I hope everything has worked out well for you since.     On 2012 I had after a mammogram that showed mycrocalcifications, I had a  sterotactic biopssy and nidle guide biopsy six month after that was done and was told there's was not cancer...went to the after-check up had a mammogram done back again to the same more mycrocalcifications and had another sterotactic biopsy results showed I need another Nidle guide surgery...stereotactic biopsy was done May 3rd. more than three weeks and it hurst, it's a sharp pain any-one had this happened twice can you tell me your experience.
