can a low grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma recur as high grade?

Hi,

I was treated (maxiollectory only) for a low grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma on the hard palate, I had clear margins but reading the pathalogy report it seems that the bone was eroded (i am assuming this is the bone of the hard palate), I have been clear for a long time now and was woundering,

1) can a low grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma recur as high grade?

2) How long does a low grade take to develope?

    Howdy

    First a caveat:  none of us here are experts at the nuances of this disease.  Recurrance of a low grade MEC as high grade, termed dedifferentiation, is a known event, but is very rare.   I am not aware if studies have been done looking at time to development of low grade MEC, but my conjecture is quite awhile.  Glad you're doing well.

    There is a difference between recurrence and infiltration. 

    A malignant tumor can infiltrate the bone or surrounding tissues, but if you remove the diseased part there will be problems in the future. 

    You've done therapy after surgery? 

    and your lymph nodes were clean?

    Yes tumor was removed as it was in the hard palate there was infiltration into the bone, I had clear margins and my lymph nodes were clean.
