hello everyone ,well its been 3 months since my surgery.everything was healing well ,felt ready to go back to work after my blood work and ct scan in next two weeks, when out of the blue my stomach on the side of my incision started to hurt again almost as much as right after surgery.I have to hold my chest when i cough and even move because the pain is unbearable.Dont remember doing anything to strenuos to pull the muscles. Also have a cough and a bit of a weas in my chest.Wondering if this is something to worry about and should I go in to see my doctor immediatly or wait till my follow up after my 3 month scans and blood work is done.Had a total naph. and remover a 15 cm by 9cm tumor and was stage 2 grade 3 .Anyone had the same problems. Thanks gang

Brian C.

    Peace of mind

more than likely, it is nothing but a visit to the doctor will confirm that and bring you peace of mind.

Once hit with cancer, normal aches and pains bring fear and a visit to the doc can handle that.

    Call MD

If you are in that much pain, how could you wait 3 months? Call today! But I think you know that.

    Same time frame

I am one week out from 3 months.  Right radical nephrectomy..7x5 cm stage I, grade 3 RCC.  My incision itches(9 inches) occassionally, and is still numb in places, otherwise I feel almost 100 percent normal.  I do occassionally have some back pain after a really long day.  I would go to the Doc asap with the kind of pain you are describing.  I am not a doctor but what you describe is very different than my experience.

    Not normal

    Brian,

I agree with Fox. Definately not normal. I would see the doctor ASAP rather than wait.

a doctor should make the call

    Hi Brian,

I really never had stomach pain, even right after surgery.  My back, well that's a different story.  Perhaps I had stomach pain but didn't realize it because my back hurt so bad the first 2-3 days following my lap procedure, I contemplated a mercy suicide on myself.  Of course I'm being facitious, I've never seriously comtemplated suicide (nor do I promote it) just trying to drive home just how bad my back pain was.  Unimaginable!  Once that was under control, I had discomfort in my belly, but not pain.  Used very little pain meds for tummy.

If your pain now, compares to the pain of surgery itself, go to the doctor.  There's no logic in not going to the doctor.  Let your doctor make that call...something to worry about, or no.  Better safe than sorry!

Hoping you get answers and are feeling better soon.  Will look forward to hearing great results on your upcoming scans.

    Numbness

I still have numbness 13 months after surgery on my abdomen. I have a feeling it's permanent if it's still numb after 13 months. I can live with it, though.

Pain, no. My pain did not get worse after a few weeks. I don't think it should do that. I'd get to the doctor asap.

If you get any other symptoms

Don't mess around. Go in. Call. Insist. If that doesn't work, just go to the ER. You shouldn't be having pain as bad as after the surgery this far out. The pain should be getting less. Check for warmness or redness at the incision site (or weeping) and check your temperature and make sure it's normal.

Is the pain when you move around? Or constant?

You might just call and tell them what's going on and let them decide whether you should be seen or wait. Put it on them.

    Pain

Can you just go to your family doctor? The family doctor could investigate it.

I have been having more pain the last few days and have been really taking it easy. Almost as much pain as at first. I start back to work next week (it will be 6 weeks). Sometimes I feel it is psychosematic, because I dont want to go back to work! But it hurts where the kidney was. I think my body is just looking for the missing parts!

But I am feeling very stressed about going back. It is a stressful job and I am a little fearful of not being able to handle it. 3 years to retirement. 3 years to retrement. 3 years to retirement!

I hope all is well. At least your CT scan is not too far away!

    Take care!

    Pain in Back!

    Hi Brian,

You can get intermittent bouts of pain from post op adhesions, just bending, stretching or lifting can cause pressure on them. I have quite a few and they give me pain from time to time, it is more of a sore pain though. I hope you get things resolved soon!

    Going back to work

I was stressed about going back at 6 weeks. I didn't really feel ready. My surgeon, however, insisted he'd done such a great job I was cured and I should go back. My job, though, isn't stressful, but it does involve a lot of sitting at the computer and the sitting was what made my incision area sore. It turned out to be fine for me, and I actually am glad I went back to work after 6 weeks. I think it was good for me to get out of the house and back to normal. However, I was very fatigued every day and this lasted for weeks.

I had pain in the kidney area off and on for months. It usually only lasted a few minutes and then was gone.

I heard it takes a lot longer for the insides to heal than the outsides.
