Creatinine Spike

Hi all. I just had my 6 week blood screening for the study I'm in (Everolimus). Since my right nephrectomy last December, my creatinine has been in the 1.55-1.65 range. Today it was up to 1.83. I've had several blood tests these past few months, and this one is really out of the norm. It's similar to what I  was having in the hospital following my nephrectomy.

What can cause it to spike like that?  Is it anything to be concerned about? I didn't get a chance to ask the doctor yet. The blood work wasn't available when I saw him. I'm trying to figure out why it went up. I wonder if I'm overeating salt, or meat, or if I just didn't drink enough water this past 24 hour period and if I do if it's likely to go down again?

So far so good as far as my status go. I'm doing fine on the drug. Side effects are minimal/nearly nonexistent now. I'll have a bone scan and CT scans again mid-October. I'm nervous about that, but hopeful. My last set June 12th were great. Nothing suspicious.

Nice to pop in and see familiar faces.

Todd

    Not enough water...

is a likely culprit...hydration has a big impact on creatinine

    What about salt?

I had a salty meal last night and then probably didn't drink enough water on top of that (Mexican tacos al pastor). I'd guess the two combined could really make you dehydrated and your creatinine would spike up?

    Thanks,

    Longer term...

My guess is it takes a bit longer than overnight to affect creatinine and sodium is a good thing to watch, but one salty meal shouldn't make a big difference.  Last fall following a bout with A-Fib they put me on drugs including a diuretic and by Dec. my creatine was 1.8 so the doc said take the water pill every other day and we'll check it in a month, it dropped to 1.6.  At my annual physical in Aug. it was down to 1.3 and my gfr was 57.  I watch sodium and protein intake (not a fanatic) and drink about 1/2 gallon of water a day, and I don't drink coffee, never have.  That seems to work for me, but we're all different, it may be time to consult a nephrologist.

Not sure if I would call that

Not sure if I would call that a spike or not.  For me, I am in the 1.7 to 1.9 range as my new "normal".   After surgery I was up to 7.6 for a few days.. now that caused concern to my doctors..  But I was sent home when it got back down to 3.7.  But I have only one Kidney that has a couple of cysts in it, so this is my normal now.  However, ask your Dr to be sure..
