They called me today ( MDA )

and I have an appointment at 8:30 on the 29th of May. Houston is about a 6 hour drive so we will have to go the day before. We live about 90 miles West of San Antonio . The lady that called told me to plan on being there for 3 to 5 days . It's going to be a little hard on the pocket book , but well worth it ! My PCP just wants their advice on treatments and wants me to get the treatments here at home so I don't have to stay there or go back and forth.Thank you so much for your thoughts ,prayers and hugs . Both the PCP and ENT said it's possable they will no treatments for now and just watch me closely. Wouldn't that be nice ?

    Hi Peggy

Call MDA and ask them for a list of low cost hotels in that area. When I had to overnight there for a few days that is what I did and some of them took almost half off the normal price of the room, but you got to call and tell them it is because you are going to MD Anderson

    Hope it helps

    All Great Wishes

Best of everything in your renewed journey.  Sounds like MD Anderson is ready to do a comprehensive job and I am sure they will.  All good news.

Thanks "T" , Hobbs and Hondo!

Hondo are there some Hotels that are really close because if I have to stay 5 days whoever takes me may have to leave me and my Husband there and we dont drive in Houston so would have to walk. The lady I talked to at MDA said that there is a Hotel right there that belongs to MDA and that u can just walk across a skywalk and you're there. The rooms start at $115.00. Thanks for your help and info .

    Hi Peggy...

I don't know if this would work for you or not, gas is a factor but still would probably come out cheaper than the $115.00 a night...and that is an RV.  Do you have one or a friend who may let you borrow one.  Many treatment facilities have RV spaces in the parking lot.

I had a choice to stay in a home for $20.00 a night that was part of the treatment center and close by / offered shuttle for free, or a hotel or stay in an RV in the parking lot.

I chose the RV bc I have five kids and wanted to be with them when they came down to see me on the weekends.

I lived in that 24 foot RV thru my entire rad treatments :)

Be sure you call ahead if something like this would work ...and be sure you know what hookups they have ...the treatment facility I stayed out offered electric and water...but no sewer or cable.  So once a week I had to pull up and go dump....  :)

You may want to look into that housing option...many treatment centers have homes with 5-12 rooms (some even large apt building they have taken over and use for patients while getting treatment).  At anywhere from $20 - $70 a night it's still cheaper than a hotel.  Some hotels offer a "medical rate" or an MDA rate ....check on that too....it's usually negotiated with the hosptial / treatment center and the rate can be as much as 20% or more off the regular rate.

    Best,

    Tim

    Peggy,

I have some cancer kicking boots you may use.  Don’t worry; this is just a little clean up.

    Thanks Tim

for your time and your great Ideas and tips . I have a friend that stayed in an RV at MDA ,I will ask if he still has it (they bought one just for that reason)if I have to stay there for more than the 3 to 5 days. My daughter and her husband will take us so we probably will need more space, but if I have treatments there I will look into some of your sugestions. Thank you again for your thoughtfulness (is that a word?) Well anyway that's what I mean.

    Sorry

    Peggy,

So sorry to hear the news.  Your attitude is just so awesome I wish we could bottle it and give it away to new members!  Go get rid of this setback and continue on with your life.

It is what we all fear every time we get tested.  Sorry it happened to you.

    When I was first diagnosed...

I thought hard about going to MDA, and so did a search on my computer of hotels near there.  If I remember right, there were shuttles coming and going all day to and from the hospitals.  You might find a cheaper room, a little further away from the hospital, that has that shuttle service.

Sweet Billie , thank you so much . No one seems to know what happened guess that really doesn't matter. I plan to do whatever MDA says I just hope it's not Chemo. Who know it might not be that bad it's just that I haven't had any so the unknown is always scary . I will keep posting , I plan to take my Laptop with me . I don't go until the 29th. Hope it's ok to wait that long.

First of all, don't worry about the waiting too long part. If it were dangerous to wait they would have gotten you in sooner for sure.
Don't be scared of chemo. You may not even need it but if by chance you do, there are so many kinds out there and someone on here will be able to give you all the details about the kind the onc might choose for you IF you even need it. Chemo has gotten so much better! People don't get as sick as they once did and it's no longer a gaurantee that you will lose your hair. In my case I had erbitux which actually made my hair grow!! I had amazing eyelashes too, dare I say I miss that?????

    Hi Billie

Thanks for your reply . They actually made my appointment for tomorrow the 15th but my Daughter couldn't take me before her kids are out of school. I was so surprised that I could get in that soon, but my ENT and my PCP acted like it would be ok to wait. Wow if I do need Chemo I hope it's Erbitux because since rads and loseing so much weight my hair has gotten so thin ! As soon as I know if and what my treatments will be you can bet I will be on here asking questions ! I may even have to have Radiation again but am assuming it will be in a little different area and hoping it wont effect my taste and salivia glands this time.
