Surgery is tomorrow

Hubby's surgery is tomorrow. Ivor Lewis with Dr. Bilmoria at Northwestern. He previously practiced at Md Anderson. We have seen three different Doctors since Valentines Day. My husband has complete confidence in him and it is just an hour from the house.  I am starting to freak out a little but I think I can handle this. Please pray for us.

    Good Luck To You

Good Luck to you and your husband tomorrow. We will be praying for you both. It is a rough surgery and a long recovery. Patience, patience, patience. Everything will be ok.

    Good Luck

Good luck on the surgery. Your husband will look forward to the little post-surgery milestones - that first drink of water and the joy of getting the many tubes removed one at a time. Also, warn him the solution they give him for the swallow test tastes terrible! On second thought, maybe you should just let him be surprised. No sense giving him anything else to worry about. Good luck!

Best of Luck on your husband's surgery

We will thinking of you and your husband tomorrow and sending positive thoughts your way for a successful surgery and complete recovery. It is certainly normal to have some concerns with a surgery as extensive as this, but it sounds like you have an experienced surgeon and the folks in ICU will take good care of your husband after the surgery.

    Best Regards,

I see your posting was from

I see your posting was from yesterday, so you are now waiting for your husband to return from surgery.  I pray you find that all went well and he is awake and speaking with you.  My husband's surgery was February 19, 2013 and he is doing extremely well with no complications or set backs.  Take it one day at a time, get plenty of rest now while he is in the hospital and know you are in the thoughts of many on this site.  My husband, Paul, was home 8 days after surgery with a feeding tube.    All went well with the feedings, he was able to maintain his weight, and it was removed 6 1/2 weeks post surgery.  He is eating light meals several times a day.  God bless you with peace of mind!

Surgery went well everything else sucks.  It is breaking my heart to see him suffer. You can never be prepared for this ordeal. I am grateful I found this group and I know exctaly what to expect.  It is still difficult to watch someone you love go through this and also be the strong person at the same time.

It is hard to be the care
It is hard to be the care taker and watch them suffer. Believe me, it will get better. One day at a time. Did he do ok in recovery?

    So glad the surgery went

So glad the surgery went well, It is a rough one, but thankfully he was able to have it. I can remember some of the things about my hospital stay after my Ivor Lewis, but they kept me as comfortable as they could. By the time I went home (13 days later) I only took motrin for pain. I know I was lucky. Wishing him the same success. Of course the other adjustments were difficult, and healing takes time. but it will come. Praying for him and you, Sandra

Today is a better day. Pain

Today is a better day. Pain is under control being out of ICUs made a big difference. He actually slept a little last night. Today he will go for a walk.  Can someone answer this question. He is choking on saliva but he has a ng tube and obviously is not drinking anything.   This is causing him to panic. Do you thing it was because the head of his bed was too low?

    Better day

Each day will get better as you are seeing. Larry never went to ICU. He was up and walking the next morning. His surgeon was very strict on walking 4 times a day. He did have some choking on saliva as well, very minor and only the first 24 hours. He would panic as well. Larry's ng tube draied for 3 days, ALOT. So much that they were worried. But all resolved itself the more he walked. Good luck and I'm glad things are moving along.

Thank You. It helps him when

Thank You. It helps him when I tell him other people had the same issues.  The caregivers on this site are truly angels send from above. I cannot help my husband without help from complete strangers. I have never been a part of a group that is so loving and caring.  its a crappy way to find a group but I am grateful I did.

Did they give your husband a

Did they give your husband a suction tube to suction the saliva out of his mouth?  My husband had a suction tube so he didn't have to swallow his own saliva very much.  It really helped with the choking until the ng tube was removed.  Best wishes.  Be sure to take care of yourself while he is in the hospital.  You will need your strength when he gets home.

50 hours post op and things

50 hours post op and things are improving. Gn tube is out, no leaks. He had a drop of broth, a sip of water and a lollipop. His pain is tolerable. He still has a epidural, morphine is down to twice in 24 hour period.  I have never been more proud of him. He is truly my hero.

WOO HOO!!!  I love to hear no

WOO HOO!!!  I love to hear no leaks.  It's amazing what they go through, I don't know where my father gets all of his strength.  Sounds like your husband is a very strong guy too.   My father's surgery was 4/1/13, and he's still on a liquid/few soft items that are soft.  It seems that other's have progressed a little quicker with food, but I'm not pushing for anything. Liquid and softer sounds fine to me.  Does he have a j-tube?

    Cherish

I cherish those moments when I see Larry sleeping like a baby. I often am puzzled where he gets his strength, and don't know if I could do it. He is my hero, as frustrated as I get he is still my hero. I hope your hubby continues to improve, get rest while you can. When Larry was discharged I felt like we were thrown off of a cliff.
