    Fistulas – Ouch?

    Fistulas – Ouch?

    They say that fistulas are caused by the body’s waste trying to get out of the body faster than it’s getting out through the “normal route”. The waste burrows through layers of skin and tissue and makes it’s own route out;

    I guess we gotta’ give our shtuff some credit, huh? ( I had one next to my stoma, but it healed by itself after a few months).

    The United Ostomy Association’s board may have more posts regarding fistulas than this forum; from what I remember, there were an awful lot of fistula owners there! They often discussed the treatments and success of different treatments for fistulas, so you may want to check it out! (https://www.ostomy.org/forum/index.php )

    The “General Ostomy Discussion” was the most popular forum there, but searching for “fistula” can provide faster results than browsing.

    (The Chinese/Asian physicians came up with a way of threading a string through the length of the fistula, worked it back/forth, and that manages to get it to heal from the inside-out. I haven’t kept up with that technology, and it may very well be in use in western medicine as well) (It’s called “fistula threading”)

    See: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16529689

    The people there, are no different than us here; they fight and menace each other in the same manner. (ha ha)

    The only big difference, is that the majority there with intestinal problems, resections, etc., are not cancer sufferers, but have (or are) suffering from Crohn’s, Colitis, or other diseases of the intestine. You don’t find quite as many “care givers” there as you do here, so most all of the dialog is from the patients themselves, with first-hand discussions regarding their routes to better health.

    Good luck with that, and best wishes for better health!

    John

    I had a fistula after my ileostomy reversal. The intetine attached itself to the stomach right where the stoma had been. So I leaked there for a while.

    After 3 or 4  weeks it healed itself from the inside out.  I hope you too have the luck that I did. I've been NED ever since (3 years)

    Sean –

    Re:

    Huh? There’s plenty of individuals that can be compared to your situation! Do yourself a favor Sean, and go read at the link that I provided. You’ll find many, many others with fistula problems, and you will find some good answers there.

    If your “docs” feel you have some sort of an “unusual” affliction, perhaps it’s time to locate some other physicians. Second, third, and more opinions regarding serious health matters should be mandatory, in my opinion. Fistulas are far from “unusual”, and some reading at the UOAA web site should provide enough proof of that!

    I truly wish you the best of health!

    ( But I do think you’ll do fine, even without my “best wishes” J )
