Miracle Fruit Tablets to restore taste, stimulate saliva

Hi, everyone.  "T" posted information about miracle fruit tablets at the end of a post on another topic so I thought I would re-post his information here so that others would become aware of it.

Here is what T said (thanks, T):

A tip/hint I'll confidently pass on as I've personally seen it's effectiveness. When I started to see my taste go astray, I, at the advice of my PCP bought a product called Miracle Fruit Tablets. It's a berry extract that effectively acts as a halucinegen for your tongue. I just googled it and found a place here in VA that sells them (ordered on-line). The effect lasts for a few hours. Things that are bitter taste sweet and things that are sweet and have lost their sweetness re-gain it. It's done wonders for saliva production while eating too! It's not something I've used often but it's helped when I need a little edge in getting food into me ;)

    With A Word...

Although I doubt there is anything in it to be of concern...

And T did mention his PCP told him about it...

But, I would run it through your onco first....

Case in point, I was having some issues with lower back pain, onco thought it might be liver or kidney problems going on... My PCP prescribed high doses or Motrin... When the onco found out she kind of ummm said NO.. Apparently acetaminophen and ibuprofen are not so good for your liver, especially if you have inflamation or something going on with it...

    Michael....I agree with John

on always running things by your Onc/RO to make sure they are ok....natural things/OTC things/and other prescriptions I always ran past my Onc.....I did go look these up to see how they work, and it appears they adhear to the tastebuds.....so chances are your Dr.'s will ok them, but maybe you want to forego them the hour before radiation.

I'm done with treatment, so I ordered them right away!!! Laughing  I can't hardly wait to get my buds stoned...LOL.

    Got Dan's at Amazon!

Wonder if there's about to be a run on Miracle Fruit.. just bought 2 packs at Amazon for 25. Dan told me to order one, I ordered the other for my son... who studies neuropsychology.. this will give him something interesting to play with.

I am anxious too.. wonder if it can be used to help loose weight,.. the lemon water vs lemonade, sounds like a plan.

I was told one time by my PCP that one of the above mentioned is hard on your Liver and the other one your Kidneys don't remember which is which. Think that is if they are used long term but may not be a good idea when you're on cancer treatments either. So yes be sure to always ask your Doctor before taking or useing anything .

JG is always right !! and I mean that most sincerly !

    Never Give Up...

Peggy, keep on trying every once in a while....

It took me two years befoe I could eat ice cream again, and enjoy it....

Until then, I'd take a bite, first was good...., after that nothing, I'd lose the taste. Eventually it just came back...

    Best,

    John

hi all, just found this convo

hi all, just found this convo and dI am intrigued.  I have had my 3 chemos and 35 rads - finished the last of January 2013 - still on PEG tube and still not gaining any weight. I am wondering if these Miracle Fruit tabs may help me?  Seems I really don't know what I want to eat because basically everything tastes the same - ugh!  And ice cream is the worst!  Cakes, cookies, bread pizza, etc, are so dry.

    Hi Kari,

I'm curious as to what you discovered. I've found certain foods were affected...

Mind you, I still have taste for certain foods (which amazes me). There are some foods I can taste while others are like eating caulk. I did a MB tablet and tried a vanilla yogurt. It enhanced the vanilla flavor and took away that little bit of sour that yogurts have, I tried it with mashed potatoes and eggs and there was no real noticable difference but cream of wheat with butter and sugar was wonderful.  Unfortunately, it doesn't do a thing for the sores and the pain associated with putting food in your mouth :(  I'm going to keep on trying as I heal.
