    Welcome to the board.

You do not share other details about you and what made you to take the PSA but the increase could be due to an infection. Enlargement of the prostate due to hyperplasia also leads to higher PSA values. In any case the previous PSA of 2.4 could also be considered high depending on your age.

Have you done any digital rectum examination?
    W
hat about any prostate manipulation or sex the day before drawing blood for the test?

    Hope for the best.

Were the results read to you via, one of the employee, who may have read the decimal point wrong; ask for a written copy of the report.

Did the doc do a digital rectal exam(figure wave) before you did the blood test?

Hi yes i was also thinking about the decimal point when i got home from seeing Doc, but he did show me the report on the screen even so it is possible they got it wrong it would be great if they had, also it would have been interesting if he thought a psa test would have been needed after he had felt the prostate, i remember when i asked him about checking it 3years ago he said he would do it back to front ie check my psa first this is the first digital test i have had.

    Tests for better diagnosis

So far you have not been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Wait for the urine test results and let time rule what to expect. Meanwhile engage in testing to get closer to a proper answer before proceeding to a Biopsy. You could check with a free PSA, PAP and the newer PHI test.

The PSA from benign cells goes higher with age. At 70 (less 9 months) yours 2.4 ng/ml could be considered normal. A surge of 20 additional points in a short period does usually "invoke" hyperplasia, but it could be a "mixing" of both. Are you experiencing any particular symptom?
Treatments for cancer for seniors over 70s are very much subjected to other health issues. I think it proper to do now tests related to the overall "system". Bone densitometry scan and levels of testosterone, as well a ECG and checking diabetes and anemia is due to your age, independently of cancer.

    Commonly the PSA marker indicating the presence of PCa makes a progressive curve. The newer PHI test seems to be better and more reliable. Check the net for the PHI test. Here are links to a study and article on the matter;

    Test results

    Hi VG,

Thanks for your comments the urine test came back as negative, if only it was an infection but i'm not so lucky hehe, i need to go to the toilet about once at night then early in the morning, but i had the same trouble thirty years ago when i was doing very heavy lifting, then i went to the pacific islands for three weeks and the trouble wen't away so i'm sure it was strain then, also now i'm lifting heavy things again, in the winter on very cold days if i'm uptown shopping i could go every half an hour. i don't have diabetes and don't suffer from anemia, i think i'm quite healthy apart from this.

I like the way you spell it

The negative urine test (no infection), the frequency in urination and abnormal PSA levels are raising flags for prostate cancer. PCa is usually symptomless. Advanced cases with metastases may be accompanied with pain and difficulty in urinating. In any case only a biopsy can diagnose the disease.

I do not know if you are being assisted by a doctor but you need to get the opinion of an urologist.

Digital rectum examinations done by experts can verify if the prostate is enlarged. This could be Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia which occurs to the majority of man, particularly in the “young” guys over 70s.

I am pleased to know that you are fit and healthy. I hope that you do not become a member in our boat.

    Best to you.

Non invasive indicator for the need to biopsy

for prostate cancer. Not saying that you require this, but for your information, if necessary.

(By the way I have no comment on your PSA scores....only running, can have an effect on the PSA, if your name Sprinter has something to do with running)

    PCA3 test
This test is a new investigational ( only an indicator) urine gene test that is available. The test is a molecular biologic assay. This test has a specificity of 75% and a sensitivity of 57%. (What that means is that among 100 bad tumors, for example, they only can identify 75 of them. And among 100 good tumors, they identify them as bad in 57). The test is done by a doctor who does a DRE and vigorously massages(the fun part...my doc is very experienced, has muscles on his finger, and can make a grown man cry) the prostate; the patient gives urine and the results are sent to Bostwick Laboratories(the only laboratory that does this) for analysis.

So the way the results work, 35 is the magic number, so the less one score is below 35 the better. Mine was 8.3 "Prostatic cells are present but do not over express the PCA3 gene", "value of 35 or greater suggests a high likelihood of prostate cancer"

It is also stated that only a prostate biopsy can diagnose prostate cancer. The test's preformance has been established by Bostwick Laboratories. It has not been approved by the United States Food and Drug administration and should not b4e used as the sole evidence for or against the diagosis of prtostate cancer. Clinicco-patholological correlation iws indicated.

    Yes, good news indeed

    Yes, good news indeed.

Let the trend to “continue” and get the tests periodically checking for clues that could be behind the previous increase.

    Best.
