    Does This Count?

    Jan and Rick's Backyard Pond

The view out of our back picture window.  Sorry it was during the early spring before rainy season when the pond is low and the aerator pipes are visible.

    Wow!

That's the view from your house?  I'm jealous.

    Oh yes!

    It counts indeed.

What a wonderful view to be able to look on each new morning.  It really makes me wish that the Nevada desert wasn't my home. I love nature, I especially love trees, which we are short of here in the desert.

    Thank you for sharing.

    104 amongst the flowers

I know this is not cancer related, but I found this story inspiring.

You can't tell me that his love and nurture of nature has helped him live to the grand age of 104.

May we all be so blessed.

    Not Quite as Nice Today

You are welcome and yes it is delightful to sit in our sunroom every morning, although I'm no longer working I still get up early, savor a cup of freshly brewed coffee, read a good book, and look up to gaze upon this scene.  Unfortunately, it's not as nice as when this picture was taken nearly a decade ago.  Hurricanes and drought have taken a toll on the woods in the background.  Nearby development has altered the ecosystem to a degree, I believe, allowing increasing numbers of exotic invasive species to get a foot hold and displace native species, despite our best efforts to keep them at bay.  Still it is delightful.

Manmade Pond But Not By Me

Yes, the pond is manmade, but I didn't dig it.  It is approximately 1/4-acre in surface area and well over 15 feet deep.  The original owners/buiders dug the pond tpo obtain "dirt" to use to raise the level of my house and the one next door.  This part of SW Florida is subject to "sheet flow" wherein rainwater from the county north of us runs "downhill" to the river about one mile south of us.  It runs in a "sheet" about 1-6" deep straight across land to the river, hence the need for raising the foundation levels of the houses.  My particular home is a stilt house raised about 11 feet in the air.  The following picture illustrates typical "sheet flow" during a rainy season afternoon thunderstorm (no this isn't duing a hurricane).  Once the rainy season begins, within a few weeks the ground is saturated and what you see in the photo below is common until winter time when the dry season.  The photo bellow is the same approximate ares as the original photo, although the butterfly garden is not as well developed.

Thank you and it is pleasureable

Thank you and it is a joy to overlook the pond and butterfly garden while savoring my morning cup of coffee and enjoying a good book.

    Every Night

Every night I walk, rain or shine and I always look up.  In the year I have been doing the walk I have been amazed each time.  I have not seen the same sky twice.

Just look up tonight, you will know what I mean!
