    Hi Bill

Hi Bill.  I'm sorry you are so down - my thoughts are with you.  Have you had your 4th treatment and Pet scan after that already?  They will probably have to tweak your diabetes treatment (insulin?) until they get it right.  I have known people to develop diabetes purely from prednisone and it was temporary which is what I hope to be the case for you.

I know it's scary right now but keep the faith.  Sending you big hugs filled with positive energy and hope.  Hang in there, buddy!

    My wonderful Dad had type

My wonderful Dad had type 2diabetes before his diagnosis... He didn't need any change of medication, just an insulin at home once... True prednisone does elevate it... The only difference was at home He was on metformin same as prior to diagnosis and after, but in hospital they used to do insulin since they have better control.. I wouldn't add diabetes to your worries... It will be fine and you will be fine... Just concentrate on getting better don't even think twice about your diabetes... And as Jim said it could be temporary. When my Dad was initially diagnosed with diabetes his level was sooo high hemoglobin a1c they started insulin shot right at the office the moment He was diagnosed they said He would continue rest of His life. My Dad changed diet right away and In one month He decided to stop the insulin on his own and never had to go back on insulin shots except that onetime at home... Doctors can predict but not always know... I know how it feels to be down but try your best to stay positive....take care wishing you clean results...

    Hard days...

    Hi Bill,

Just wanted to tell you to hang in there and let you know you are in my thoughts and prayers. Try to take things one day at a time and keep your stress at a minimum. I know how hard that is to do. You are not alone friend...when feeling down we are here for you. We all have days where we feel like everything is just so hard to deal with. My shingles really put me in a bummer state of mind for the last 10 days, but trying to remember...this too will soon pass. Sending you positive loving thoughts today. Love...Sue  (FNHL-2-3A-6/10)

    Praying

Bill, praying for a miracle that you get that clean scan despite whatever odds you think are against it. Anything is possible, even though I know it doesn't feel that way to you right now. Hang in there! Sherry

    A few questions

    Bill,

I have never heard of abvd causing diabetes. Rarely, it can temporarily worsen already existing diabetes, but not "cause" it.  Who said that the chemo "caused" you to have diabetes ?  Also, I have never heard of diabetes affecting the efficacy of chemo.   Chemo can instensify neuropathy that was already present in diabetic patients, but that is temporary, and a side-effect -- not somethng that affects how well the med kills cancer cells.

I hope that your diagnostic CT coming up shows great progress.  My CT after four rounds did NOT show the tumors all gone; they were shrunk by an average of 60%.   My onc said that this was as good or better than he expected, and that I should achieve total remission, and I did.  If four infusions were going to cure you, no one would have scheduled you for 12 infusions.

My point:   When (if) your results show the tumors still there after four cycles, it does NOT mean that the med is failing ,or that you will not achieve full remission by the end of treatment. I hope, pray, and assume that you will be good as new, four months from now.

    I agree

Bill, I agree with Max.  That's why I'm hoping the diabetes is temporary :).  I had a friend recently who had to go on prednisone for someting non-cancer related and he developed diabetes.  When they stopped the prednisone, his sugar problems went away shortly after.  So, I'm keeping my fingers, toes and eyes crossed for both temporary diabetes and complete remission/cure, buddy.

    Hugs - Jim

  • Diabetes

Bill its probably temporary. Since going on Rituxan my blood sugar is up to 139 from 78. Also my last scan showed renal and hepatic steatosis which can be a precursor to diabetes. Hopefully it will go away. I am seriously considering dropping the Rituxan and taking my chances. You are young and strong and I see a good outcome for your treatments. Keep the faith.

    Thanks All Again

Thanks All again for the positive thoughts. I don't think ABVD cuased the diabetes, but it's triggered by it mostly from steriod (prednisone) as Jim mentioned, but Unfortunatly cant stop taking it. But the problem now is that it's been a week with diets and medication and can't get it to go below 180 fasting.

    * To answer your question Max, I been told from diabetics friends that Cancer thrives on diabetes.

    Hey Bill

Hopefully with more tweaking, they'll get the diabetes under control - I hope so.  I know my blood sugar elevated slightly during treatment but not enough to have to go on medication.

    Good

    Bill,

If you are receiving abvd, you are not receiving any Prednisone. I wish you well.

I think I can Manage it.

This Morning my blood sugar was at 200 , I did an hour of walking around the neighborhood and ate about 4 small bowels of salad with light dressing and some tomato's and then have a some chicken breast and some vegetables for dinner also did some light aerobics her and there.

Checked my blood sugar around 10:30 pm.

I was suppose to start taking my first type-2 medication JANUMERXR 1000 MG. today, but did not take it. I feel I can manage it by good diet and exercise without medication. I will see how it goes tomorrow.

    Just a thought

    Hi Bill,

My Bill's glucose level seems to be a little elevated since he has been on chemo etc ( a little over 100) but the doctor never says anything.  I myself (Becky) have Type 2 Diabetes.  I think you will do very well with change of diet and a lot of exercise.  You look like a healthy young man who could get into that.. Be careful though and think hard about not taking the medication.  Be sure and moniter your sugar levels frequently, you don't want to do your body anymore damage.  I think you know that your A1c count tells what damage the glucose could be doing to your blood veesels. 7 is not terribly high but it is not low either, it is over the normal range.  The medication will normalize your sugar level and help your body to balance itself and you can always get off of it.  I know it is hard to accept but like the others say, it probably is only temporary but you need all the help you can get right now.  I know you don't want to take so much medication and I agree but at the moment your body just is not capable of working to it's optimum level.  Just try to be balanced.  BTW, I have been curious, what is the trophy for?

Hoping you well, Bill a& Becky

    Michael C. Hall

Becky, the trophy is a golden globe award and the pic is of Michael C. Hall - star of "Six Feet Under"and "Dexter"on Showtime.  Michael C. Hall I think is from NC originally and had a battle with Lymphoma I believe.  I loved both of those shows but don't have Showtime anymore :).  Hope you're having fun in Mexico.

So is there even a Bill with cancer or is this whole character a scam?

    You right Jim

You are absolutely correct Jim, he is my favorite actor. and had Hodgkin Lymphoma back in 2010. Also thanks Becky for the compliment. My blood sugar today between 150-160 with exercise and diet, But I have Chemo next Wednesday (4th Treatment) and I don't think I'll be having the energy or the well to exercise, I'll start my medication tomorrow and see how it goes. Thanks all for the inputs.
