Guaifenesin

Recently, I've made a couple posts about Guaifenesin.  It occurred to me that I may not have been clear on its use.  It is used for breaking up chest congestion due to mucous.  It's not to dry up sinuses or do anything with nasal congestion.  Guaifenesin used to be a prescription drug that now can now be found in OTC medications.  Robitussin and Mucinex are the two brand names that have Guaifenesin in them.  WalMart, Walgreen's and CVS have their own brands of Tussin.  If you look an the labels of all of them, they will list the amount of Guaifenesin that can be found in each 5ml (teaspoon).  I believe there is a super duper version of Mucinex that has 200mg instead of the usual 100mg.  I don't mean to knock Mucinex or Robitussin but they are quite a bit more expensive than the generics for the same amount of Guaifenesin.  By far, WalMart's brand of Tussin (Equare) is the least expensive.  I know no one that works at WalMart nor do I own stock in the company.  I'm just letting you know my experience with the subject.

    DM version

I forgot to add that the DM version has dextromethorphan.  This, I believe, is supposed to be addictive and is used for coughs.  The dosage for DM version is 1 or 2 teaspoons every four hours whereas the plain version of Tussin you can take up to 4 teaspoons every four hours.

    Thanks

Thank you for the helpful information. I used Guaifenesin as part of a prescription cough medication; and it has proved quite effective. Glad it can be purchased over the counter. Rick.

    A couple weeks ago, someone

A couple weeks ago, someone posted about the Walmart brand of Tussin DM. I was trying Mucinex, but it was too expensive at over 10 dollars for 14 pills. When checking on the mg per pill, I was surprised to see that it was an extended release pill with 1200 mg of Guaifensin.

Anyway, I headed for Walmart and bought the 8 ounce fluid brand (Equate) for just under 3 dollars. It is listed as 100 mg. I scanned the shelf and happened to see a “Mucus Relief Chest” which contained 60 pills for about 8 dollars. Its content is 400 mg per pill. I bought the Equate and the pills and trying them out.

Also related to us folks are our dry mouth condition. About a month ago, someone posted about XyliMelts. I ordered the pills and it arrived a few days ago. Surprisingly, the pill does provide relief from my dry mouth condition.

Am thankful for this great site with all the sharing of ideas.

    400mg pills

Hawvet, please let us know how they work out for you.  Also do they look like they would be easy to crush.  The time release probably had directions of one every 8 to 12 hours.  The maximum amount of Guaifenesin that I have seen to take at one time is 400mg.  I'm assuming that you would get 400mg every four hours with that time release capsule or tablet.  The problem with most time release medications is you can't crush them.  They have to be swallowed whole which leaves alot of us out.

    Mucus Relief Chest pill

George, am trying all these new products but have not gone full blown yet. First on the 1200 mg mucinex pill. It was large like the size of a vitamin pill and I had a hard time swallowing it.  I choked and spit a couple out and there went a dollar plus down the drain. On this pill, the instructions include “do not crush, chew, or break tablet” It should be taken 1 tablet every 12 hours not to exceed 2 tablets in 24 hours. Because of the swallowing problem, I gave up using mucinex.

I tried that liquid Tussin which tastes like cough syrup and it sort of burnt my throat. It probably is cough syrup called Tussin DM by Walmart. I could not take the second teaspoon.

The “mucus relief chest” 400 mg pill is slightly larger and shaped and looks like the old round aspirin pill, except it is light blue in color. For me, it is easier to swallow and that will be my test for the next few weeks. There are no instructions on crushing so I think it is okay. Since you asked, I crushed one a few minutes ago and dissolved it in a paper cup of water. It went down okay.

I just bought these mucus pills/Tussin last week. I have only taken this pill when my mucus problem is in the extreme. I may start taking 3-4 tablets a day or more to see how my body reacts. The instructions says up to six tablets a day. Will let you know of the results.

I do not know about the rest, but the mucus problem makes it difficult for me to swallow water.  Am just returning to be a little more active on this board.
